Satterfield discusses offense’s progression and preparation for season

Nebraska offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield spoke to the media on the team’s fourth day of fall camp Thursday. Satterfield discussed a variety of topics surrounding the offense and the Huskers in general.

The team participated in its first full team practice Thursday as well, which Satterfield considered a great day for the players.

“Everybody was moving on the field at the same time,” Satterfield said. “I think coach [Rhule] has done a really good job of just grinding away of how we can do that. We don’t have 190 players, but he’s been very creative in making sure that everyone on the field is doing something. So, even though we’re together, everybody’s still getting a lot of reps.”

How’s dorm life?

“It’s good to get back into the dorms for the first time since the 90s,” Satterfield said. “I think it’s a good thing. It’s great for staff unity and for camaraderie ship with the players. So a little bit old school but I’m kind of liking it.”

How helpful has it been with development?

“It’s unbelievable with every position,” Satterfield said. “There are kids that have gotten nearly a hundred reps the first four practices. In most places, they’re not getting 50 the whole time they’re in camp. It may not be pretty ball all the time but it’s guys out there getting to compete and getting better with every single rep. In the long run, it’s going to help us.”

What have you seen from the offense?

Who have you seen stepping up in the leader sense?

“I’m not going to say names cause you usually miss one,” Satterfield said. “But it’s the usual suspects. We challenged Jeff [Sims] in the summer to really start to make this his team and I think he did a really nice job among a lot of others.”

What have you seen from the freshmen wide receivers so far?

Do you have a preference between the run and pass game?

“We have to do it at a high level when needed,” Satterfield said. “We have to be able to run in four minutes well. We have to run the ball in the red zone in a 60/40 game or 70/30. It could be a 30/70 run to pass and we’re running it that well. In different phases of the game, we’re going to call for you to throw the ball and run the ball at a high level,” he said. “We’ve got to be able to do both whenever that time is needed.”

What’s your preference with the running backs?

Do you have a target number of carries for the fullback or will it be situational?

“There’ll be certain games, certain defenses where they’ll be utilized more and there’s some that maybe they don’t have as big a role in that game,” Satterfield said. “It’ll fluctuate and it just depends. But it’s fun to have a fullback on the field.”
