SANDSTORM: Amarillo High volleyball completes epic comeback to down Randall in five-sets

The Amarillo High volleyball team pulled off a stunning comeback against Randall at home on Tuesday night. The Lady Sandies were on the verge of being swept before coming back to win 21-25, 17-25, 25-23, 25-17, 19-17. Here's what to know:

How it happened

Randall was firmly in control throughout the first set and had no trouble taking victory in set two. The Lady Sandies climbed out to an early lead in the third set before the sides battled to 23-23. AHS scored the final two points to take set three and cruised to victory in set four. Randall jumped out to an 11-6 edge but AHS battled back to tie it at 13. The two teams traded points with RHS getting match point on three occasions before AHS scored three unanswered to win it.

What it means for Amarillo High

Randall beat AHS twice already this year and for the Lady Sandies to come back the way they did against the defending 4A state champions should serve as a significant momentum booster moving forward. Sienna Cavalier (18 kills, 16 digs), Blair Pennington (49 assists, one ace, four blocks) and Bird Moffitt (17 digs) led the way.

What it means for Randall

It was the second loss of the year for the Lady Raiders and it's non-district. Still, being so close to pulling off a sweep against a team of AHS' caliber for the third time only to lose could serve as a potential wakeup call to Randall that no team is unbeatable. Brooke Henderson (12 kills, 16 digs), Jordyn Gove (31 kills, 20 blocks) and Sidney Soria (50 assists, 14 digs, nine kills) led the way.

What AHS head coach Mike Moffitt said

"It was fantastic. That was the atmosphere we anticipated with both crowds staying in it the entire time. That's what you want out of a Randall-Amarillo High match right there. You want it to go all the way to five and it was awesome. We couldn't ask for anything more."

What RHS head coach Haleigh Burns said

"At the end of the day any loss (we have) we take as a lesson hopefully. That's what I'm trying to explain to them. Learning what we need to be better at, what we did wrong and how to play on our strengths will help with discipline."
