San Francisco 49ers star Brock Purdy to be inducted into Chandler Sports Hall of Fame

San Francisco 49ers quarterback and Phoenix-area native Brock Purdy, who is a week away from leading his team in Super Bowl 58, will be inducted into the Chandler Sports Hall of Fame later this month.

Purdy, who played high school football in the Chandler Unified School District at Gilbert Perry, is one of seven individuals who have, according to an announcement from the City of Chandler, "brought recognition to Chandler through their athletic accomplishments."

A celebration will take place at Chandler Hamilton High School's auditorium on Saturday, Feb. 17. Purdy figures to be back in the area after the Super Bowl in Las Vegas to take part in the ceremony.

Honorees are inducted for national or statewide record-setting performances or contributions to the community and athletics in general. Athletes who are from Chandler or live in Chandler during the time of their achievement, or those who attended a Chandler school, are eligible.

The selection committee is comprised of former coaches, school administrators, athletes, and others with a genuine interest in the history of athletics in Chandler. The awards have been celebrated since 2004.

Other inductees are Dashawn Jordan (pro skateboarding), Steve Kanner (Hamilton golf coach), former pro baseball minor leaguer Adam Mannon, former Pepperdine volleyball star Melissa Melhorn, South Dakota State head football coach Jimmy Rogers and pro golfer Andrew Yun.

Rogers, who played at Hamilton, led the Jackrabbits to the FCS football championship this past season.

"This year’s phenomenal class features athletes and coaches who have set the standard for excellence. All these honorees have represented the City of Chandler and their Chandler school in a way that is second to none," said John Vincent, co-chairman of the Chandler Sports Hall of Fame Committee, in the announcement from the city. "From athletes competing in the Super Bowl and X Games to coaches leading their teams to championships, these seven individuals are superb.”

Tickets for the event, which includes both the induction ceremony and luncheon, are $15 and available online through Eventbrite.
