San Elizario clinches 4A state soccer title with late goal at UIL championship: recap

The San Elizario Eagles will take home their fourth UIL Class 4A state soccer championship after Friday's win over Boerne Greyhounds.

San Eli lost its first three games to bigger schools but capped the playoffs with 24 consecutive victories.

San Eli 1, Boerne 0, 80th. San Eli takes the win claiming their fourth state title in school history.

San Eli 1, Boerne 0, 71st. San Eli seems to have turned back the charge. Boerne has more possession than it had before the goal, but San Eli is staying composed.

San Eli 1, Boerne 0, 68th Boerne has come to life, forcing Stephen Chairez into his first save on a point-blank shot. Shortly before that he parried one out of the box that was dangerous. Two real chances for the Greyhounds but San Eli fends them off.

San Eli 1, Boerne 0, 62nd. With 18:07 to play, Francisco Marquez fires from 25 yards out and into the bottom left part of the next. A wonder strike has a dominant San Eli team on the verge of a state title.

San Eli 0, Boerne 0, 60th. Eduardo Marquez fires just wide from the edge of the 6-yard box. From a tough angle got it past the keeper but not on net. Shot attempts 10-0, on goal 6-0.

San Eli 0, Boerne 0, 57th. Not much has happened in the last five minutes. Ball bouncing around midfield.

San Eli 0, Boerne 0, 51st. Jamie Garcia with a free kick from 20 yards out and keeper punches it over the next for his sixth save and San Eli's fifth corner. The corner again is a near miss as the Eagles can't direct it on goal.

San Eli 0, Boerne 0, 50th. San Elizario is tightening the screws but nothing to show for it yet. They are at about 75% possession this half. Eagles win a corner but it goes untouched all the way across the goal mouth.

San Eli 0, Boerne 0, 44th. Marquez with another chance inside the 6-yard box but it goes right into the chest of a Borene defender.

San Eli 0, Boerne 0, 41st. San Eli misses on its best chance of the game. Eduardo Marquez beat the keeper to a sloppy backpass and sends it a yard wide. Borene counters but is offsides.

San Eli 0, Boerne 0, half. San Eli credited with five shots, all on goal. Boerne with zero shot attempts. Corners 3-0 for San Eli. Boerne was offsides twice, San Eli once. Boerne with four fouls, the Eagles with three. Possession dominated by San Elizario.

San Eli 0, Boerne 0, 38th. Shots are 5-0 San Eli and two of those were troubling. Eagles have had three corners. Boerne has created problems twice but no shots and no corners.

San Eli 0, Boerne 0, 33rd. Boerne with another half-chance on a counterattack. Got the ball along the end line wide of the goal and put the ball past keeper Stephen Chairez into the middle of the 6-yard box, but San Eli had Boerne outnumbered in the box and cleared it away.

San Eli 0, Boerne 0, 28th. Jamie Garcia fires one on net from 15 yards out and goalie makes a reaction punch save. The Eagles caused trouble on the corner but couldn't get another shot on goal. Shots now 4-0 and all the possession is San Eli's.

San Eli 0, Boerne 0, 25th. San Elizario's Marcus Legardo lobs a shot in from 45 yards, it takes a funny artificial-turf bounce and forces the Boerne keeper to punch it over the net for a corner. A good service sails just over the heads of the group in the box and a bicycle kick shot goes wide. The bicycle kick was not credited as a shot attempt, however.

San Eli 0, Boerne 0, 20th. At the midpoint of the first half, shots are 2-0 for San Eli, which has had at least 60 percent of possession. The possession stat is not kept at this level.

San Eli 0, Boerne 0, 15th. Eduardo Marquez takes a long ball and gets a shot off that is parried wide for an Eagles corner, the first of the game. Boerne headed it clear. Marquez credited with San Eli's second shot.

San Eli 0, Boerne 0, 10th. Kevin Hernandez for San Elizario has the first shot on goal, from the edge of the 18-yard box. Goalie caught the ball at his chest. This came after the Eagles diffused a half-chance from Boerne when it got some numbers forward and the ball ping-ponged around the San Eli box.

San Eli 0, Boerne 0, 5th. Eagles with more possession early but no chances either way.

1 minute to kickoff: The game will start on time. It's 79 degrees and showing a 14-mile per hour wind out of the south. That's the opposite way it was blowing in Wednesday's semifinal. San Eli will go into the wind in the first half.
