Sam Bradford to speak at 2023 OKC Metro High School Sports Awards

The Oklahoman is proud to announce Oklahoma City native and former Oklahoma Heisman trophy winner as the special guest speaker at the 2023 OKC Metro High School Sports Awards, presented by BancFirst. The show will be held on June 8 at the OKC Convention Center.

More than 250 high school athletes from across the Oklahoma City area will be honored. The show will also name players of the year for 21 sports and include several major awards, including overall Players of the Year, Teams of the Year, Coaches of the Year and a Courage Award.

“I am thrilled to host the OKC Metro High School Sports Awards and celebrate these outstanding student athletes," Bradford said. "These kids have worked hard to get where they are today, and I am honored to help recognize their dedication and diligence.”

Bradford grew up in Oklahoma City, attending Putnam North High School where he was a multi-sport athlete, receiving numerous accolades, including All-City and All-State honors from The Oklahoman.

Bradford made his Oklahoma Sooners debut in 2007 as a redshirt freshman. In that first season, he passed for 3,121 yards and 36 touchdowns on his way to being named the Sporting News Freshman of the Year and an honorable mention All-American.

His 2008 season will forever live in the minds of Sooners’ fans. That season, Bradford passed for 4,721 yards and 50 touchdowns, with only eight interceptions. He led the offense that was the first team in NCAA history to score 60 or more points in five straight games. At the end of the season, Bradford was named the Davey O’Brien Award winner as well as the Heisman Trophy winner. He became only the second sophomore to ever win the Heisman. Bradford’s Oklahoma career also includes two Big 12 Championships, 8,403 yards passing and 88 touchdowns.

The St. Louis Rams drafted Bradford number-one overall in the 2010 NFL Draft. He was named the Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2010 . Bradford played for nine seasons in the NFL before retiring in 2018. He finished his career with 19,449 yards passing and 103 touchdowns.

Bradford was recently inducted into the American Indian Athletic Hall of Fame.
