For the sake of Browns fans, can’t Carson Wentz have a bad week?

The answer is no. At least not yet.

In fact, it seems as though being passed upon and criticized as “not a top 20 quarterback” has only fueled Carson Wentz so far. Although we are only two games in, Wentz has thrown for 438 yards, three touchdowns, a 94 passer rating, and zero turnovers. That last one is probably the most meaningful, considering he is a rookie. He is the first rookie quarterback since 1970 to win his first two games with no turnovers.

While he didn’t exactly torch the Bears on Monday night, he was definitely solid. He ran the offense (including lots of no-huddle) as though he’d been there for years. He took what the defense gave him, protected the ball and made the necessary throws to get another win. Eagles head coach Doug Pederson said it perfectly after last night’s win:

“Again, by no means was it perfect, but at the same time he’s seeing things really well and he’s commanding the huddle. And the dialogue on the sideline with players and coaches with him is something a nine- or 10-year vet would do, and it’s just showing his maturity and the ability that he has to play quarterback.”

ESPN’s Jon Gruden was also impressed, selecting Wentz as the “Gruden Grinder” after the game. Gruden said of Wentz:

“He came in here with a no-huddle offense, no backset, went right down the field for a field goal. Two weeks in row they score on their opening drive. He showed toughness in the pocket, great command of this offense, no turnovers….”

Of course it has only been two games, and those two games (sorry again, Browns fans) were not against great defenses. Also, none of this directly affects the Browns, now that week one is over. But as we suit up our third quarterback in as many games, it still hurts.
