Saints will have to win shootout at the Meadowlands

The New Orleans Saints offense already looks like it’ll be one of the NFL’s best. Drew Brees’ 423 passing yards and four touchdowns against the Oakland Raiders suggest he has plenty of gas left in the tank. Brandin Cooks, Willie Snead and Michael Thomas are sure going to be fun to watch.

Injuries Updates for opening week of the season

Now, the Saints need to prepare themselves for a New York Giants squad that put up a very convincing win in Dallas last week, with Eli Manning and the defense both doing their jobs (Dez Bryant had one catch in the game.)

Everyone remembers last year, when the Saints won 52-49. Brees had 505 yards and seven touchdowns, while Manning had 350 yards and six touchdowns. It was only the most exciting shootout game of the 2015 season. Now asking both men to combine for 850 yards and 13 touchdowns is a bit excessive, but it will be a shootout.

The Saints aren’t shutting down Odell Beckham Jr. Let’s get that out of the way. Delvin Breaux is hurt, so they don’t have anyone suitable to give Beckham a rough matchup. New Orleans was second-last in yards allowed and surrendered the most points last year.

As for the Giants? No team in the NFL surrendered more yards than they did. Yes, holding Dak Prescot to 227 yards and no touchdowns is good, but he’s a rookie backup. Allow us to see more of this Giants’ defense before we jump to conclusions.

Even in The G-Men’s secondary, there aren’t enough guys to cover Cooks, Snead, Thomas and Coby Fleener. You just know it’s going to be another high-scoring game. If the Saints defense was somewhat mediocre on Sunday against Oakland, they would have won. This time around, their only hope is for Brees to outduel Manning in a high-scoring matchup.
