Saint James softball survives pitchers duel to take down Piedmont to open state tournament

OXFORD — In a hotly-contested pitchers duel, Saint James emerged with a 2-1 win over Piedmont in the first round of the AHSAA Class 3A state tournament.

Saint James advanced in the winner's bracket and will play at 2:30 p.m. on Field 4 vs. Winfield, while Piedmont moves down to the loser's bracket and will play on Field 2 at 2:30 vs. Excel. All games at the AHSAA state tournament take place Choccolocco Park in Oxford. Teams will play up to three games Thursday, needing two wins to advance to Friday's competition.

Saint James struck first in the second inning. Savannah Smith got the Piedmont offense going in the fourth inning with a single before scoring two hits later to tie the game. The Bulldogs wouldn't be able to get anymore runs in the inning before letting Satin James regain the lead in the bottom half of the inning.
