Saint James football hires former Montgomery Catholic coach Aubrey Blackwell

Saint James football has hired Aubrey Blackwell as its new head coach, the school announced Thursday.

Blackwell coached at Montgomery Catholic from 2015-20 and spent a season at Benjamin Russell in 2021. In Blackwell's final season with Catholic, the Knights advanced to the state championship game.

Former Saint James coach Neal Posey left the program last month to accept a college coaching position at the University of Central Florida. He led Trojans to an 11-3 record and advanced to the Class 3A semifinals.

In his seven seasons, Blackwell is 57-26 with an 8-5 playoff record. In that 2020 state final, he fell short to state powerhouse Fyffe 21-16.

“I am honored to serve as the next head football coach at Saint James School, and my family and I are excited to return home to Montgomery and the Trojan family,” Blackwell said in a press release.

“It is an honor to follow two great coaches and friends in Neal Posey and Jimmy Perry. They built an incredible program, and we will work diligently every day to maintain their success and the respect Trojan football has earned.”

In the most-recent realignment, Saint James classed up to Class 4A Region 3 with Munford, Booker T. Washington, Bullock County, Handley, Talladega, Tallassee and Cleburne County, sparking a new era of Saint James football.
