The Oakland Athletics used the 41st pick to nab Rutgers University star and Jackson Memorial High School grad Ryan Lasko on the opening day of the MLB Draft Sunday night.

That was significant for multiple reasons:

  • The 21-year-old outfielder is the first Shore Conference alum to be taken on the first day of the MLB Draft since 2016.

  • Rutgers hasn't had a player picked higher since the Cincinnat Reds took Todd Frazier with the No. 34 pick in 2007.

  • Lasko is the third-highest draftee in Rutgers baseball history after Bobby Brownlie in 2002 (No. 21) and Frazier.

Lasko in 2023 wrapped up a historic three-year Rutgers career that saw him become the first player in program history to be named All-Big Ten First team twice. He ranks in the Top 5 in Rutgers history in career home runs (38, 3rd), single-season total bases (166 in 2022, 2nd), single-season runs (81 in 2022, 3rd) and single-season home runs (16 in 2022, 3rd),

The A's went back to Rutgers when they chose Drew Conover with the 316th overall pick in the 11th round on Tuesday.

Conover was also picked in the 2022 draft (597th overall pick, 20th round) by the Detroit Tigers but opted not to sign.

Conover, a Pittstown, N.J. native, played at Voorhees High School and two years at Seton Hall University.

He was 5-4 with 4.50 ERA for Rutgers this year and led the team with 64 innings and 79 strikeouts.

If both Lasko and Conover sign, they would become the ninth and 10th Rutgers alumni in affiliated ball.

Conover's father, Kevin Conover, was selected by the Chicago White Sox out of Rutgers with 641st overall pick in the 25th round of the 1989 MLB Draft. They are the first father-son duo in Rutgers baseball history to both be drafted.
