ROUNDUP: Pomeroys to host tournament doubleheader Wednesday

Feb. 24—The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods men's basketball team has earned the No. 2 seed for the River States Conference tournament and will host a quarterfinal home game at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday against the winner of Monday's matchup between No. 7 seed IU-Southeast and No. 10 Midway.

Wednesday's contest will take place inside Hamilton Arena.

SMWC compiled a 23-5 record and a 17-1 conference mark to place second in the RSC point system standings that are used to set the tournament field. The point system is designed to provide balance to the unbalanced conference schedule caused by the presence of an East and West Division.

The RSC earns two automatic bids to the NAIA national tournament. The regular-season top seed, Point Park, has secured one of the league's automatic bids. The second bid will go to the RSC tournament champion. If Point Park wins the tournament, the second automatic bid will be earned by the team that competes against Point Park in the RSC tournament championship game.

—Pomeroy women also open at home — The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods women's basketball team has earned the No. 3 seed for the River States Conference tournament and will host Point Park at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

SMWC compiled an 18-10 overall record and a 13-5 conference mark. The Pomeroys' 18-10 record marks the most victories and highest winning percentage in a season for Saint Mary-of-the-Woods women's basketball since 2012-13 (19-8). Point Park stands 18-8 overall and finished 11-6 in RSC play this season.

—SMWC 87, Oakland City 68 — At Oakland City, Cobie Barnes led all five starters in double figures with 22 points, along with seven rebounds and four steals, in this men's game Saturday.

Chaz Birchfield added 18 points for the Pomeroys.

Shon Tupuola contributed his 10th double-double of the season with 13 points and 16 rebounds. Greg Jenkins added 10 points and a team-high five assists and Greg Johnson pitched in with 10 points.

—Oakland City 74, SMWC 66 — At Oakland City, a 25-point fourth quarter got the visitors back into contention in the women's matchup Saturday.

Brooklynn Jones led four Pomeroys in double figures with 15 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Allyson Hardiek added 14 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.

Other double-figure scorers included Destiny Thomas with 11 points, six rebounds and three assists and Irye Gomez with 11 points and a team-high four assists. Madison Fueger added nine points and 10 rebounds, and Kylee Stepp scored six points off the bench for SMWC.

College softball

—Sycamores lose after winning — At Memphis, Tenn., Indiana State dropped an 8-5 decision to Tennessee Tech as part of the Blues City Classic on Saturday.

The Sycamores actually outhit their opponents 10-8 as Anna Robakowski got the scoring started with a two-run double in the first inning. Luci Kapelka and Ana Macha also contributed doubles for ISU. Teammates Abi Chipps went 2 for 3 with a walk and a stolen base and Kennedy Shade went 2 for 4.

Hailey Griffin (5 2/3 innings), Cassi Newbanks (one inning) and Annie Waggoner (one-third of an inning) pitched for the Sycamores, with Newbanks taking the loss in relief. Half of Tennessee Tech's runs were unearned as Indiana State committed three errors in the field.

Earlier Saturday, ISU edged Memphis 3-2 behind the combined one-hit, nine-strikeout pitching of Lauren Sackett and Megan Asher; 4-for-4 hitting by Danielle Henning; RBI doubles by Isabella Henning and Shade; and an RBI single by Shade.

ISU (7-6) will try to bounce back from the loss to Tennessee Tech when it plays Southern Illinois Edwardsville at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Memphis' Tiger Softball Complex in its final game of the Blues City Classic.

—Pomeroys swept — At Walnut Ridge, Ark., Saint Mary-of-the-Woods lost 7-6 and 6-4 to host Williams Baptist on Saturday.

Jasmine Kinzer led the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods offense in the first game with a home run among two hits with two RBIs. Abbi Henderson also had a multi-hit game with two singles and one run scored.

Other key offensive contributors included Ruby Gray reaching base three times with a double and two runs scored, and Jaleigh Crawford with a single and two RBIs.

Jasey Conn and Lyric Krause led the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods offense in the second game with two hits each, including a double. Conn scored twice with one RBI, and Krause also drew one walk and had one RBI.

Other key offensive contributors for SMWC included Henderson with a single and one run scored; Kinzer with a single, RBI and a stolen base; and Justyce Rohrabaigh with a single, run scored and one stolen base.

College baseball

—Engineers split — At Atlanta, Rose-Hulman split with the Emory Eagles in its season-opening doubleheader Saturday afternoon. Rose won the first game 11-9 before falling 11-6 in the second game.

The two teams will return to the field Sunday for a 1 p.m. matchup.

In Game 1, Kade Kline got the Engineers on the board early with the first home run — a two-run shot — in the third inning.

After Emory took the lead with four runs in the fourth, Rose-Hulman responded again with a three-run homer from Kline, his second of the game, and an RBI single from Colter Couillard-Rodak.

Schuyler Wilcox picked up the pitching win in relief for the Engineers.

For the day, Couillard-Rodak led the team by going 4 for 8 with a pair of runs batted in and Kline finished 3 for 7 with five RBIs to show for his two bombs.

Boys basketball

—Linton 54, North Central 44 — At Farmersburg, the visiting Miners broke away from a 39-39 tie after three quarters Friday to complete a SouthWestern Indiana Athletic Conference sweep.

Both the boys and girls teams from Linton finished a perfect 7-0 in SWIAC play.

Paul Oliver led all scorers with 18 points in Friday's game while Conner Daily added 11 and Jamison Field nine. The 18-4 Miners await the winner of Tuesday's Sullivan-Paoli game at the Class 2A Paoli Sectional.

Ethan Willis had 12 points, Jaden Hooper 11 and Trashaun Cockrell nine for the Thunderbirds, 10-12, who play Lighthouse Christian on Wednesday at the Class A White River Valley Sectional.

—Maroons, Warriors fall — Robinson and Casey both lost Illinois regional championship games Friday to end their seasons.

Robinson, in the final game for coach Mack Thompson, fell 59-58 to Flora at the Class 2A Vandalia Regional. Casey lost 53-37 at home to powerful Tuscola in the Class A Casey Regional.
