Roundup: Oak Grove names Meadows as baseball coach

Jul. 20—MIDWAY — Oak Grove has named Mike Meadows as its head baseball coach, the school announced Monday.

Meadows has over 30 years of high school baseball experience — including 17 years at North Davidson, where he led the Black Knights to the 4A state championship in 2016.

He replaces David Thomas, who has been the program's only head coach since starting play in 2018.

This spring he led the Grizzlies to a record of 11-4 overall and 8-1 in the Central Carolina 2A Conference — tying North for their first conference title — and reached the second round of the condensed state playoffs.

"There's no doubt that Coach Meadows can continue to extend the success of Grizzlies Baseball," Oak Grove athletic director Stan Smith said in a press release, "and compete for championships on a consistent basis as he has done with his programs in the past.

"Coach Meadows brings state championship caliber experience to a baseball community with that same goal in mind, but will also do a great job impacting our athlete's lives beyond baseball."

POST 87 PLAYOFFS SET

THOMASVILLE — High Point Post 87 will face Rowan County Post 342 this week in the semifinals of the Area III semifinals series of the American Legion baseball playoffs.

The HiToms are set to begin their best-of-three series today at Rowan. Games 2 and 3 have yet to be determined.

The winner of that series will advance to the one-game Area III championship and automatically qualify for the state tournament.

THOMASVILLE — Matt Corder of the High Point-Thomasville HiToms was named the Coastal Plain League's Hitter of the Week, the league announced Monday. Corder, a rising sophomore at Mississippi State, had a .625 average in three games.

In eight at-bats he had one double, two home runs and two RBIs while scoring three runs.

The utility player also drew three walks to push his on-base percentage to .727 to go along with a 1.875 slugging and 2.602 OPS.

Wilmington's Nick Logusch, a rising senior at East Carolina, was named the Pitcher of the Week.
