Roundup: Newark Catholic softball upsets Mechanicsburg in district semifinal

Maris Knowlton’s two-run triple in the top of the first inning and Avery Nagel’s three-home run in the second Tuesday powered the Newark Catholic softball team to a 9-4 victory against top-seeded Mechanicsburg in a Division IV district semifinal.

Kami Diaz totaled three hits, two runs and an RBI, and Knowlton, Nagel and Joanna Bailey each added RBI singles for the No. 4 Green Wave (17-10), who play No. 2 Danville for a district title at 3 p.m. Saturday at Pickerington Central. Veronica Bailey struck out five in four two-hit scoreless innings of relief.

BASEBALL

Northridge nipped

Host No. 12 North Union scored two runs in each of the final innings to edge Northridge 5-4 in a Division III first-round game.

Quentin Felhofer led the No. 18 Vikings (3-18) with a double and two RBIs, and Alex Wright added two runs and Layne Mercer a run and an RBI. Felhofer struck out three and allowed five hits and three earned runs.

Liberty falls

Jackson Cecil had a hit and a run for Liberty Christian in a 13-1 loss at No. 2 Fairfield Christian in a Division IV second-round game.

Parker Griffin and James Rainier had a hit apiece for the No. 12 Eagles (10-8).

Newark drops road game

Thomas Olon struck out three and allowed one earned run in 4⅔ innings of relief for Newark in a 9-3 loss at Bloom-Carroll.

Kyle Driskel had two hits and a run for the Wildcats (16-8-2). Evan Humphrey added a hit and a run and Brody Driskel a hit and a walk.

TRACK

Driskel wins discus

Landry Driskel threw a distance of 131-feet-11 for Lakewood to win the discus during the Division II district meet at Westerville South.

Driskel qualified to next week’s regional at Lexington. Heath’s Allie Dunlap also qualified, taking runner-up in the pole vault (11-0).

In the Division II, District 2 boys meet, Lakewood's foursome of Ryan Byers, Caleb Rafferty, Corey Rafferty and Derrick Norwood took runner-up in the 3,200 relay (8:27.15), and Johnstown's foursome of Cameron Beverick, Collin Willard, Aidan Howard and Brenden Ball placed third (8:28.53).

Myers qualifies

Macey Myers leaped a distance of 15-2.5 for Newark Catholic to place fourth in the long jump during the Division III district meet at Granville.

Myers qualified for next week’s regional meet at Heath.

BOYS LACROSSE

Granville advances

Matt Chaykowski won 17 of 20 faceoffs, eclipsing 800 wins in his career Monday during Granville's 14-6 victory against visiting No. 13 Kettering Alter in a Division II regional first-round match.

Hart Miller scored four goals to lead the No. 3 Blue Aces (11-6), who host No. 6 Dayton Chaminade-Julienne at 6 p.m. Friday, and Colt Shaw added three goals, Matt Chaykowski, Mikey Chaykowski and Elliott Rhoton two each and Bobby Higginbotham one. Luc Kadlic made 12 saves.
