Roundup: Newark Catholic baseball slips past Granville Christian, 1-0

Miller Hutchison struck out nine, firing a two-hit shutout Friday for the Newark Catholic baseball team in a 1-0 victory against visiting Granville Christian.

Cooper Leibas singled home Mikey Hess in the second inning for the game’s only run. Kane Stephey and Bryan McAnally also each had a hit for the Green Wave (11-12).

Bentley Johnson struck out two in four two-hit innings for the Lions (13-5), and Andrew Benvie struck out three in two scoreless innings of relief. Johnson and Gabe White each singled.

Watkins wins at Heights

Bradley Vincent totaled two hits, a run and two RBIs for Watkins Memorial in a 10-3 victory at Licking Heights to wrap up Licking County League-Buckeye Division play.

Aydan Guthrie added two hits, two runs and an RBI and Andrew Botts and Trent Johnson two hits and a run apiece for the Warriors (16-7, 10-4), who broke it open with a six-run sixth inning. Braiden Bates struck out three in four three-hit innings.

Blaine Claffey recorded two hits and a run for the Hornets (7-16, 5-9). Brady Pennington and Joel Busker each doubled with Pennington scoring a run and Busker driving in one.

Johnstown nips Academy

Garrett Penrod struck out three in two hitless innings to save Johnstown’s 2-1 victory at Columbus Academy.

Braeden Archibald also struck out three and allowed three hits in four scoreless innings for the Johnnies (7-17). Jacob Myers and Nash Andrix notched a hit and a run apiece, and Erik Marohl added a hit and an RBI.

Valley beats Danville

Gunner Bowman struck out four and allowed one earned run in five four-hit innings for Licking Valley in a 6-1 victory against Danville at Don Edwards Park

Hayden Rodgers and Evan Lichtenauer led the Panthers (20-4) with a hit and two RBIs apiece. Brandt Lichtenauer and Trent Clark each tripled and scored.

Liberty edged

Three seventh-inning runs for Madison Christian sent host Liberty Christian to a 7-6 defeat in Mid-Ohio Christian Athletic League play.

James Rainier led the Eagles (7-12, 3-8) with two hits, two runs and an RBI, and Luke Mollohan added a hit, a run and an RBI, Mason Kamppi a run and two RBIs and Caleb Reichert a double and an RBI. Evan Dupler struck out seven and allowed one earned run in four one-hit innings.

Northridge drops road game

Andrew Shay struck out two and allowed three hits and no earned runs in three innings for Northridge in a 3-1 loss at Mount Gilead.

Noah Mason totaled two hits and a run and Riley Reeves two hits and an RBI for the Vikings (1-24).

SOFTBALL

Watkins blanks Worthington

Carsyn Cassady struck out 14 with just one walk in a six-inning no-hitter, pitching No. 1 Watkins Memorial to a 10-0 victory against visiting No. 37 Thomas Worthington in a Division I second-round game.

Jordyn Wycuff and Carlie Taggart each homered, combining for four hits, three runs and five RBIs for the Warriors (26-1), who host No. 19 Dublin Coffman at 5 p.m. Tuesday in a district semifinal. Kylie Trouten added three hits, a run and two RBIs and Kendal Tellings and Ali Langwasser two hits, a run and an RBI apiece.

Heights wins at Lakewood

Evie Hays homered and drove in four runs for Licking Heights in an 11-1 victory at Lakewood to wrap up LCL play.

Lily Meidl also homered, and she and Kelsey Carter drove in two runs apiece, and Lydia Rauch added two hits, two runs and two RBIs for the Hornets (15-12, 8-6). Rauch also allowed four hits in five innings.

Jaycie Montie doubled and scored for the Lancers (13-10, 7-8). Carly Williams added a hit and an RBI.

NC falls at Danville

No. 2 Newark Catholic (17-9) was held to four hits in a 7-0 loss at No. 1 Danville as the teams completed a suspended Division IV second-round game.

Liberty falls on road

No. 13 Liberty Christian (0-13) was held without a base runner in a 16-0 loss at No. 3 Mechanicsburg in a Division IV second-round game.
