Roundup: Licking Valley baseball blanks Carrollton to stay perfect

Evan Roberts struck out seven against one walk Saturday, firing a five-hit shutout for the Licking Valley baseball team in a 2-0 victory against Carrollton at Don Edwards Park.

Hayden Rodgers was a perfect 3 for 3 with an RBI for the unbeaten Panthers (5-0). Trent Clark tripled and scored both runs, and Evan Lichtenauer doubled.

Granville wins at home

Jackson McMillan struck out three in 4 2/3 innings of hitless relief for Granville in a 9-3 victory against visiting West Muskingum.

Theo Talbott totaled three hits, including two doubles, three runs and an RBI. Wilson Wells and Jacob Smith added two hits, a run and an RBI apiece with Wells hitting a triple and Chase Holtzapple a hit and two RBIs for the Blue Aces (2-2).

Utica slides past Philo

Utica scored single runs in each of the final two innings to earn a 2-1 victory at Philo.

Connor Staugh struck out seven in a three-hitter for Utica (3-2). Tyler Collura and Chase Bennett recorded two hits and an RBI apiece, and Gavin Tussey added two hits and Gavin Chinn a hit and a run scored.

Watkins beats Zanesville

Brayden Windnagel’s three-run home run highlighted a five-run first inning, shooting Watkins Memorial to an 11-2 victory against visiting Zanesville in its Licking County League-Buckeye Division opener.

Ethan Williams and Andrew Botts added a hit and two RBIs apiece and Braden Hulse and Cole Massie a hit and a run apiece for the Warriors (3-2, 1-0). Luke Smith struck out four and did not allow an earned run in a four-hitter.

Lakewood wins on road

William Marrero homered and knocked in four runs for Lakewood in a 9-2 victory at Fairfield Union.

Carson Anderson and Luke Pierce recorded three hits apiece with Anderson scoring twice, and Colton Ferry added two hits and three runs for the Lancers (4-1). Alex Bowman threw 2 1/3 hitless innings in relief of Carter Davis, who struck out a pair in 3 2/3 innings.

GCA beats Genoa

Andrew Benvie and Aiden Rhoads recorded two hits apiece, combining for six runs and five RBIs, sparking Granville Christian in a 19-3 victory against Genoa Christian at Berliner Park.

Jake Fabbro homered and drove in two runs, and Bentley Johnson added two hits and two runs and Wes Arnholt two hits and two RBIs for the Lions (2-2). Josh Benvie, Matthew Riedel and Rhoads combined for 12 strikeouts in six four-hit innings.

Newark edged late

Thomas Olon struck out six and scattered six hits but three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning undid Newark in a 5-3 loss at Pickerington Central (5-2, 2-1) in Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division play.

Austin Rose totaled two hits and a run to lead the Wildcats (2-4, 2-1). Seth Fish, Bodie Smith and Aidan Hamilton each singled.

Heath falls at Alder

Tannar Patterson tripled, scored a run and drove in a run for Heath in an 8-4 loss at Jonathan Alder.

Connor Corbett added a hit and two runs, Riley Baum two hits and Kaden Green two RBIs for the Bulldogs (4-1).

Northridge drops home game

Jamie Odrumsky scored a run for Northridge in an 11-1 loss to visiting East Knox.

Dain LeValley and Riley Reeves each singled for the Vikings (0-8).

Johnstown drops road game

Conner Sullivan had the lone hit for Johnstown (1-3) in a 10-0 loss at St. Charles.

SOFTBALL

Granville rolls

Ally Ernsberger homered three times on the day and drove in four runs in each victory as Granville shut out Buckeye Valley 12-0 and host Pleasant 7-0.

Ernsberger struck out seven in three one-hit innings with Megan Lodge following with three strikeouts in two innings against the Barons. Ernsberger struck out 10 in a three-hit shutout against the Spartans for the Blue Aces (9-1).

Sophia Patena had a hit, two runs and three RBIs in the first game, Avary King two hits and two RBIs and Hanah Rogovin and Claire Edwards two hits and a run apiece in the first game. Taylor Warehime totaled two hits and two runs and Emily Travis two hits and two RBIs in the second game.

Lakewood splits

Dani Stewart’s RBI double followed Cora Redman’s two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning, lifting host Lakewood to an 18-17 victory against New Albany. The Lancers later lost to Cardington 3-1.

Jaycie Montie totaled two hits, a run and four RBIs for the Lancers (5-2), who scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh after the Eagles scored eight in the top half, and Redman, Stewart, Lauren Griffith and Becca Streets each recorded three hits, combining for six runs and seven RBIs. Montie had two hits and a run against the Pirates, and Ashlyn Carder struck out two in a five-hitter.

Valley drops pair

Licking Valley fell 13-6 and 14-13 at West Muskingum.

D’Neya Dennis and Tori Baughman combined for seven hits and two runs out of the top two spots in the order in the first game, and Taylor Penick hit a three-run home run for the Panthers (3-4). Addison Justice and Abbe McNabb each homered and drove in four runs in the second game, and Dennis added three hits, two runs and an RBI and Chloe Cooperider two doubles, a run and an RBI.

Northridge drops two

Northridge fell 19-9 to host Liberty Union and 7-4 to Bishop Ready.

Ellie Reese totaled three hits and two RBIs, Kaitlyn Angus a hit, a run and three RBIs and Camryn Moore, Gracie Smith and Kenzie Hannahs a hit and two runs each for the Vikings (1-5) against the Lions. Addison Moore added a two hits and run, Cheyann Severance a hit and a run and Hannahs two RBIs against the Silver Knights.

NC falls twice on road

Newark Catholic dropped a pair of games 9-7 each at Grove City.

Maris Knowlton totaled three hits and a run, Kami Diaz two hits and two runs and Emma Lohri a home run and two RBIs in the first game for the Green Wave (2-3). Knowlton recorded another three-hit performance, scoring twice and driving in one, and Addi Gerber and Veronica Bailey each doubled and drove in a run with Bailey scoring twice in the second game.

Heights tripped by Comets

Licking Heights lost 9-1 and 4-3 in eight innings at Central Crossing.

Alissa West had two hits and an RBI in the first game for the Hornets (3-3). Ava VonBargen totaled two hits and a run and Lydia Rauch a hit and two runs in the second game, and Chesney McPeck struck out six and allowed two earned runs in a complete game.

Heath falls at home

Karli Staley struck out three and allowed just three unearned runs for Heath in a 3-0 loss to visiting Sheridan.

Hannah Cash recorded the lone hit for the Bulldogs (5-3) off Cora Hall.

BOYS TENNIS

Newark sweeps

Trever Anderson and Noah Devries, 5-7, 7-6, 11-9, and Brody Brent and Amari Rembert, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1, each went the distance to win doubles matches for Newark, clinching a 5-0 victory at Logan.

Winning singles matches were Will Woughter, 6-2, 7-5, Evan Devries, 6-1, 6-0, and Layton Shaner, 7-6, 6-4, for the Wildcats (2-0).

Watkins takes runner-up

Graham Smith and Nathan Walter were unbeaten at No. 2 doubles to lead Watkins Memorial to a runner-up finish during the Reynoldsburg Doubles Tournament.

Liam Grennan and Michael Hare at No. 1 and Jeffrey Smith and Landon Penrose at No. 5 each placed second.

TRACK

Turner leads Granville

Charlotte Turner won the 400 (1:02.97) and long jump (16-feet-7.25), boosting the Granville girls to a runner-up finish during the Lexington Invitational.

Ivy Miller and Caitriona Sproul joined Carmella Aulet and Ayla Cook on the winning 400 relay (52.02) and Kara Bergeron and Avery Ogg on the winning 1,600 relay for the Blue Aces, who totaled 98 points, trailing Perrysburg’s 109. Sproul in the 200 (27.26) and Nina Brechler in the pole vault (10-0) added runner-up finishes, and Bergeron in the 1,600 (5:12.89), Audrey Ames in the 300 hurdles (49.65), Megan Cummiskey in the high jump (4-10) and Annie McCracken in the pole vault (9-6) each placed third.

Johnstown’s Reece Savage took runner-up in the 1,600 (5:11.96) and third in the 3,200 (11:40.07). Teammate Kate Ruffle added a third in the long jump (15-2.5).

In the boys meet, Heath’s Carter Higgins won the discus (152-9) and took runner-up in the shot put (46-8.25). Granville’s Greyson Ingle won the pole vault (13-0).

Taking runner-up were Heath’s Brayden Bayles in the long jump (19-11) and Granville’s Cade Roberts in the high jump (6-2). Placing third were Granville’s Corbin Bell in the 400 (52.32), Heath’s Bayles, Jahki Royster, Carter Wiley and Tristyn Jones in the 400 relay (44.86) and Johnstown’s Alan Villa in the shot put (46-8).

Apel leads Watkins

John Apel ran a time of 49.55 to win the 400 for the Watkins Memorial boys during the Stingel Invitational at Pickerington North.

Adding runner-up finishes for the Warriors were Jacob Holbert in the long jump (21-1.75) and Andrew Kirk in the discus (136-2), and Apel, Joe McIntosh, Elijah Hardiman and Adam Brazier placed third in the 800 relay (1:30.94) as did Apel, Brazier, Connor Black and Troy Blankenship in the 1,600 relay (3:32.56).
