Basketball Roundup: Waldron girls, Hillsdale Academy boys still undefeated

HILLSDALE COUNTY — Tuesday and Wednesday saw plenty of high-scoring action from boys and girls basketball games in Hillsdale County. Week 3 matchups heated up right before teams head off for holiday break and upcoming tournaments.

Take a look at some of the top highlights so far from Week 3 and see where teams stand as they head into their respective holiday tournaments.

Jonesville girls basketball gets first home win

Coach Tom Dunn and the Comets could not take down the league favorites in Grass Lake on Monday night (54-24 final), but the Comets did not let that deter them from a big win at home against an in-county rival.

The Comets welcomed Hillsdale on Wednesday and made quick work of the Hornets with transition basketball.

The 59-25 win is Jonesville's second of the season. Senior Lyra Nichols led the team with 19 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Senior Gracen Hager had nine points, six rebounds and three steals. Junior Alexis Trine had 13 points. Junior Haley Mach had 10 points, six steals and four assists.

The Hornets were led by Ava Ruley who had six points. Karsyn Stebbins had six points. Rakell Brown had four points.

Jonesville prepares to defend their Pool A Pat Paterson tournament next week as they play Hillsdale Academy at Reading High School on Dec. 28. Game action starts at 3:30 p.m. Hillsdale takes on Camden-Frontier at home in the Pool B tournament. Game time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Waldron girls basketball stays undefeated

Waldron escaped Litchfield with a 33-25 win in a battle of undefeated teams.

That win keeps Waldron's record perfect at 4-0. Leading the way for the Spartans was Kailie Kurtz with 15 points. Morgan Burk contributed eight points.

The Spartans look like a favorite to win this year's Pat Patterson holiday tournament Pool B bracket. They match up with Will Carleton Academy in Round 1 at Hillsdale High School on Dec. 28. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.

Hillsdale Academy teams sweep Tekonsha

The Hillsdale Academy boys stayed perfect at 6-0 with a 63-19 win, and the girls won their first game of the season, 49-10.

Leading the way for the girls was Iris Millies with 10 points, Angela Alvarez with eight points and Lydia Jackson with seven points. For the boys team, Dominic Scharer led once-again with 22 points. Lincoln Knirk finished with nine points.

The Colts head into Pool A play with the only undefeated record remaining of Hillsdale County boys basketball teams. They take on Jonesville (4-3) in Round 1 at Reading High School on Dec. 28. Game time is 5 p.m. The girls play Jonesville at 3:30 p.m.

Reading girls basketball loses thriller to Bronson

The Rangers dropped to 3-3 after a 42-40 home loss.

Aubree Ervans led the Rangers with 10 points, seven rebounds and two assists. Abby Affholter had seven points and four rebounds. Bria Wiler and Jenna Londeau each had six points. Londeau had five rebounds and two steals. Wiler had three rebounds.

The Rangers look to rebound on Dec. 28 in Round 1 of the Pat Patterson Tournament against Pittsford. Game time for the Pool A matchup starts at 6:30 p.m.

Waldron boy basketball defeats Litchfield by two points

The Waldron boys improved to 4-3 after holding on to beat Litchfield, 55-53.

The Spartans led 49-36 heading into the fourth quarter and held off a comeback by the Terriers (5-2). The Spartans were led by Landon Monahan, who hit four triples and scored 23 points. Seth Williams had 17 points. Sam Williams had seven points.

More than half of the Terriers' points came from the arc. Junior Alvarez returned to the lineup for Litchfield and posted 15 points and three triples. Brandon Campbell had 14 points. Tyler Bills had 14 points, 12 of which came from 3-pointers.

Waldron has momentum heading into the Pat Patterson Pool B tournament. The Spartans face off against Will Carleton Academy in Round 1 on Dec. 28. The game starts at 5 p.m. at Hillsdale High School.
