ROUNDUP: ISU's Hancock named to top assistants' list

Oct. 12—Indiana State pitching coach Justin Hancock has been named to D1Baseball's Top 100 Assistant Coaches on the Rise list, it was announced Thursday.

Hancock is the only assistant from the Missouri Valley Conference on the list.

The third-year pitching coach is coming off a season in which he guided the Indiana State staff to a 45-17 mark on the mound with 15 saves. The Sycamores combined for a 3.84 ERA over 558 innings pitched while adding a 534:193 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Opponents hit just .239 against the Sycamores in 2023.

Overall, the Sycamores finished fifth in the NCAA in earned run average (3.84), sixth in total shutouts (7), 14th in strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.77), third in WHIP (1.23), and sixth in walks allowed per nine innings (3.11). The entire Indiana State weekend rotation earned MVC All-Conference recognition in 2023 with Connor Fenlong (Pitcher of the Year) and Matt Jachec earning first-team honors, while Lane Miller went undefeated on Sunday in taking second-team recognition. Jared Spencer (first team) and Cameron Holycross (second team) also earned All-MVC recognition out of the bullpen. Fenlong and Miller also earned First Team All-ABCA Midwest All-Region honors.

—Northview 3, South Vermillion 0 — At Brazil, host Northview defeated the Wildcats 25-14, 25-6, 25-11 in a first-round match Thursday in the Class 3A Northview Sectional.

The Knights play the winner of Thursday's late match between Indian Creek and Edgewood in Saturday's second semifinal match. The opener pits Owen Valley against Brown County.

—Eels, Thunderbirds prevail — At Switz City, Clay City beat Bloomfield 3-1 and North Central beat Dugger Union 3-0 in semifinal matches Thursday in the Class A White River Valley Sectional.

Clay City and North Central play each other in Saturday's second semifinal match, following the opener between Shakamak and Lighthouse Christian Academy.

—Linton 3, North Daviess 0 — At Elnora, the second-ranked Miners beat the host team 25-19, 25-14, 25-11 in the Class 2A North Daviess Sectional.

It was the 21st consecutive win for Linton, which plays Eastern Greene on Saturday.

—Riverton Parke 3, Cloverdale 0 — At New Market, the Panthers beat the Clovers in Thursday's first match at the Class 2A Southmont Sectional.

—Patriot honored — Terre Haute North's James Belmar has been named to the all-District 5 team.

He is the first North player to be named since 2019.
