Roundup: Hillsdale and Academy golf hold first event of the season

HILLSDALE — Spring sports kicked off for the 2024 season with some inclement weather conditions disrupting a portion of the first week of events. Not to worry, though, every team has now gotten a chance to take the field and the greens heading into the second weekend of April.

Colts and Hornet boys golf teams impress in opening season event

The Hillsdale Academy and Hillsdale varsity golf teams joined forces with the Concord Yellowjackets to kick off the new season at a familiar course. The three teams had their first major event of the season at the Hills of Baw Beese golf course in Hillsdale.

The Colts finished with a final team score of 167 to beat out Hillsdale (191) and Concord to win the event. Two returning all-state honorees from Hillsdale Academy led the field of golfers through nine holes. Senior Rykert Frisinger shot even at 35. Frisinger balanced two birdies with two bogies and parred the other five holes. Senior Ridley Fast shot a 39 to take second individually, with a birdie on a par-4 and a total of five pars.

The Hornets followed closely behind, with returning senior Joseph Miller earning a 42 through nine holes. Fellow senior Jaden Hall shot a 43 to take fourth. Taking fifth was freshman Ben Lutz of Hillsdale Academy with a 44.

Hillsdale and Jonesville girls soccer enjoy early success

The Hillsdale and Jonesville girls soccer teams have started the year with a couple impressive performances.

The two teams started the year off with a cross county showdown, but the 5-0 win for Jonesville was eventually forfeited.

After that, the Hornets battled Bronson for their second game of the season. Ava Ruley scored the game tying goal, ending the match on a 1-1 final.

The Comets rebounded for an 8-0 win over Vermontville Maple Valley and a 3-2 win over Hanover-Horton. The team most recently dropped a 7-0 final to Leslie. (Comet scorer information was unavailable at the writing of this article)

Hillsdale tennis splits first match

The Hillsdale varsity Hornet girls tennis team entered their season with an impressive split with Battle Creek Pennfield, earning a 4-4 tie.

Winning were number one doubles Victoria Sheffer and Sabina Hernandez-Labato 2-6, 6-3, 10-8 number two doubles Quinn Ortiz and Holly Lanius 6-2, 6-4 number three doubles Cassidi Mapps and Samara Williams 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 and number four doubles Olivia Kuenzer and Emily Butterbaugh 6-2, 6-0.
