ROUNDUP: Former Linton star earns OVC honors

Jan. 9—Vanessa Shafford, who led Linton to back-to-back championships in Class 2A girls high school basketball, is the Ohio Valley Conference co-Player of the Week for University of Southern Indiana women's basketball.

In two games last week, Shafford averaged 21 points and 12 rebounds per game from her guard spot while shooting 46% from the field and 50% from 3-point range.

She had 26 points and a career-high six 3-pointers plus nine rebounds in a win over Tennessee State, then had 16 points and a career-high 15 rebounds in a win over Tennessee Tech.

For the season she leads the Screaming Eagles (9-5, 4-0 OVC) in points (15.2), rebounds (7.4) and steals (1.6), ranks in the top four in the conference in scoring, rebounding and field-goal percentage and has scored in double figures for 12 straight games. USI plays Thursday at Southern Illinois Edwardsville.

Girls basketball

—Taylorville 40, Paris 35 — At Taylorville, Ill., Graci Watson had 18 of the Tigers' points in a close loss Saturday.

Paris is now 13-6.

—Altamont 68, Marshall 41 — At Marshall, Ill., Lynn Welborn had 12 points and six rebounds but the Lions suffered a nonconference loss Saturday.

Marlee Heighton and Ella Mattas had six points each for Marshall, which played Tuesday at Terre Haute North.

Prep wrestling

—Wildcats win SV 8-Way — At Clinton, host South Vermillion won its own annual SV 8-Way Invitational on Saturday.

Individual champions for the Wildcats were Alex Shryock at 175 and Zack Hess at 285. Wyatt Walters of North Vermillion was named Most Valuable Wrestler.
