Rotary All-Star Classic shifts away from North vs. South format for 35th football showcase
For the first time, the Rotary South All-Star Classic will not pit the North against the South.
After a decade of dominance from Team South, which has won the last 11 games, this year's contest will mix talent up amongst the Blue and Gold teams for a more competitive football matchup scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday at Fort Myers High School.
"I think just looking on paper, it's certainly going to accomplish the goal of trying to make it a more competitive game," said long-time Team South and Estero head coach Darren Nelson. "At the end of the day, these kids are good players, they're all-stars for a reason... once that game comes around, these guys are ultimate competitors. When you cross those lines on the field, they're going to play as hard, fast, and physical as possible and try to put something on tape to get noticed."

Highlighting the Blue team's offense is East Lee's dynamic duo of Victor Georges and Gary Hagan, while Estero's Matt Wilson will get some shine at quarterback as well. Bishop Verot's Jeremiah Dean, Ryan Gadson, and Parker Turner will show why the Vikings' defense was one of the best in the area and Estero's Luke Ghannam will help establish a no-fly-zone in the showcase.
For the Gold team, Tanner Helton, Jack Shuker, and LJ Blackwell bring the Sentinels potent offense to the All-Star game while Chris McFoley and Alex Thelusma will represent Fort Myers on offense. Dunbar's Eric Fletcher and Kelby Tyre highlight seven different Tigers who made the roster.
