Rookies on the rise: Dover's emerging talent shines at annual wrestling tournament

CALCUTTA — Dover High School’s youthful wrestling team had an excellent showing at the 46th annual Everett Hoppel Memorial Wrestling Tournament held at Beaver Local High School on Saturday.

The Crimson Tornadoes, who have many underclassmen in their starting lineup, had 10 individual placewinners in the popular tournament in which Dover has been an annual participant.

“I’m pretty happy with how things went,” said Dover’s first-year head coach Gannon Petrullo, a former multiple state qualifier for the Tornadoes. “We have kind of a young team this year, but we’re learning and we’re improving every week, and the results here showed that.”

In addition, the Tornadoes finished eighth in the 13-school team standings with 100.5 points.

Host Beaver Local won the team crown with 319 points and Youngstown-area power Austintown Fitch earned the runner-up trophy for a second consecutive season with 248.5 points.

The Tornadoes’ top place winners included Frank Ramirez (fourth, 106 pounds) and senior Adolfo Lopez (fourth, 165).

“Our 106-pounder (Ramirez) did great,” Petrullo said. “He’s been working hard all season and just grinds every day at practice, and it shows on the mats because he hits all the moves that we show him. He’s working hard every day, and he deserves a little shout out here. He’s a freshman, so we’re excited to have him for the next three years.”

Dover’s other placers included sophomore Santos Pastor-Perez (fifth, 120), sophomore Brock Reynolds (sixth, 113), junior Braidan Jackson (seventh, 132), senior Alex Heaton (sixth, 215), freshman Aidan Yakley (eighth, 215), freshman Aiden Corder (seventh, 150), freshman Caiden Windsor (eighth, 150) and sophomore Dominik Ottena-Slider (fifth, 157).

Petrullo said it’s extra special being able to lead the wrestling program of his alma mater.

“It’s really exciting,” Petrullo said, smiling. “I’m really looking forward to hopefully moving the program in the right direction and just see the kids succeed and see the program succeed and take it to its full potential. It will be a process, but I’m excited, and the kids are willing to work hard and that’s all I can ask for — to get better every week.”

The Tornadoes have a big week ahead as they prepare to host rival New Philadelphia on Thursday evening.

“We’re looking forward to it,” said Petrullo. “I know the kids are, because it’s Dover-Philly, and we’ll be ready to go and have the kids ready. There’s no extra motivation needed.”
