Rookie wide receiver Jamari Thrash 'just finding my fit' in new Cleveland Browns offense

BEREA — The great mystery with the Cleveland Browns over the last few months has been about the scheme of new offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey. That mystery has extended to one of the wide receivers who is trying to get a grasp of that offense.

Browns fifth-round pick Jamari Thrash only recently was introduced to the offensive playbook, seeing as the former University of Louisville wide receiver was still waiting to hear his name called in the NFL draft two weeks ago. He's so new to it, he remains vague on what the exact expectations for him are in that offense.

"Like I say, today was my first day out here," Thrash said Friday on the first day of rookie minicamp, "so we did a walkthrough just seeing what Coach does with his offense, just seeing what he does in offense, knowing they came from Buffalo, seeing what he did with those guys and just really just finding my role and just finding my fit in offense."

The 6-foot, 190-pound Thrash isn't complaining about that fact. He understands, as he said himself, it was his "first day out here."

Even if it wasn't Thrash's first day on the field with the Browns, it wouldn't have been something you were likely to hear him complaining about. Instead, it would've likely introduced you to the side of him that strikes everyone who has coached him through his career, including collegiately at Georgia State and Louisville.

"He was a very focused kid," Louisville wide receivers coach Garrick McGee recalled to the Beacon Journal last week. "He knew what he wanted to accomplish. He knew how to articulate what he wanted to accomplish and his demeanor was this quiet, very focused demeanor, and then when he got there, his actions were exactly that. He was the sole leader of what was going on and he studied the game really hard. His words and his actions, they met."

A big part of that is because of what Thrash went through in college. Coming out of Troup County High School in Georgia, he ended up signing with Georgia State, where he played four seasons.

However, for his final year of eligibility, Thrash decided to test himself at the one of the Power Five college programs, which led him to Louisville. He had a career-high 63 catches for 858 yards and six touchdowns for the Cardinals.

To go through that transition, though, Thrash had to be willing to accept something he wasn't used to doing. The whole college process, served as the foundation for that approach.

"I’d probably say go back to my Georgia State days, knowing when the opportunity comes to present itself, just make the most of it," Thrash said. "And when I went to (Louisville coach) Jeff Brohm’s offense, I was just on one side in Coach Brohm’s offense, but when I went to the Senior Bowl, just showing my versatility and showing that I could play inside and outside definitely helped me."

So where does Thrash fit in the Browns' offense? The clear top three receivers are Amari Cooper, Jerry Jeudy and Elijah Moore. Also in the mix are past draft picks such as Cedric Tillman, David Bell and Michael Woods II.

For Thrash, the answer remains the same.

"I mean, they’re all great players," Thrash said. "Like I said, I’m a type of guy, I don’t mind waiting my turn, I don’t mind playing my role. So whatever the coach need me to do, whatever those guys need me do, I’m willing to do it."
