Ballard places fifth, sets school record in girls distance medley

The Ballard girls distance medley team made the most of its trip to state Friday.

The Bomber girls broke their own school record and earned a top-five finish after running a 4:12.70.

"I've run this race three years at state," Katie Tollefson said. "It's cool to finally get the record. We've broken it twice this year, so I'm proud of us for doing that."

Tollefson ran the 400 leg for Ballard. State 200 qualifier Noel Boettger and Kate Miller got the Bombers off to a great start during the two 200 legs then Tollefson kept Ballard in a competitive spot for anchor Paityn Noe.

Noe won the 3A girls 3,000 in a record time and ran the 4x800 relay Thursday. She showed no signs of fatigue Friday, moving Ballard up from seventh to fifth during the 800 anchor leg.

Noe said the team was full of confidence after breaking the school mark for the first time at the 3A qualifying meet in Carroll last week. The Bombers ran a 4:18 at Carroll.

"We knew we could break that record again," Noe said. "Let's just see how much farther we can break it. Cutting six seconds off it was cool. Hopefully, it stays for a little bit longer."

It was the final time Noe, Miller and Boettger got to run together. The three seniors were glad to see their final race end with a record.

"It feels good that we could push together as a team and push past that school record," Miller said. "It was really joyful for all of us."
