Rockland boys track all-stars: Clarsktown South's Rime, Nyack's Schutzbank earn top award
They only faced each other twice during the spring outdoor track season. One won one race. The other won the other. But both Clarkstown South senior Julian Rime and Nyack junior Matt Schutzbank won a lot more than that.
The two share The Journal News/lohud Rockland Boys Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year award after state-championship seasons.
Rime, who'll run next year for the Division I University of New Hampshire, captured both the state public large-school and state overall (Federation) 800-meter titles, and Schutzbank captured the state public large-school,1,600-meter title. And, with Rime missing their 800 race at New Balance Outdoor Nationals after just spraining an ankle in an earlier relay, Schutzbank ended up edging Rime for the fastest 800 time by a high school boy in New York this season by 0.37 of a second.
On the season, Schutzbank, whose 4:12.09 was the second fastest outdoor 1,600 in the state by a high school boy this spring, also logged the fourth-best 3,200 time at 9:04.3.
He calls his outdoor 1,600 win "pretty awesome" and the highlight of a year that saw him also capture top Journal News/lohud Rockland boys indoor track honors after winning the indoor state 1,600 title.
Schutzbank said the versatility he shows doing well from 800 through 3,200 is "a big part of who I am as a runner." That versatility will expand in college. Schutzbank will play one more season of soccer for Nyack but knows soccer will be replaced in college by cross-country.
College cross-country is little more than a breath away for Rime, who ran it for Clarkstown South's varsity since ninth grade.
This year marked significant growth for Rime, who last year was hampered by both a knee issue and illness. He medaled at indoor states this past winter in the 600 in a time nearly six seconds better than he ran the distance the previous year.
And his best 800 time this spring, 1:52.68, at states, was also nearly six seconds better than his 2022 outdoor best.
His speed made him an appealing catch for a college program. In choosing New Hampshire and rejecting multiple other big squads, including Binghamton, UMass and UConn, Rime believes he found both a strong business school and a supportive team atmosphere.
Rime, who'll look to lower his personal-best times and contribute as soon as possible to the Wildcats, pretty much saw his future as a runner sealed when he was about 9 and did well, running a 5K with his big sister.
Running can be called a family sport. His dad ran in high school in California and he has two uncles and an aunt who are serious runners. Family reunions always include a race and, despite all his high school medals, Rime is still looking for his first reunion win.
"My cousin married a marathoner, who is very fast," he noted, explaining the last reunion race went to that fellow.
But between what he has done this year and the promise of college competition and training, Rime may yet gain something perhaps not quite as big as a state championship but maybe almost as sweet — family bragging rights.
"I'll definitely have more of a base built up at the next family reunion," he said.
