Rockies’ Davis out as closer, Oberg in

Colorado Rockies reliever Wade Davis has been removed from his role as the team's closer, manager Bud Black said Friday before their home game against the San Francisco Giants.

With Davis out, the closer role goes to right-hander Scott Oberg, a five-year big-league veteran who has compiled a 5-1 record with a sparkling 1.59 ERA this season, including a 1.63 ERA at Coors Field.

Davis, a 33-year-old right-hander, has 15 saves while struggling through most of the season. He has a 1-5 record with a 6.82 ERA in 36 appearances covering 31 2/3 innings, and a particularly alarming 11.29 ERA at Coors Field.

In his last outing, Davis gave up five runs -- including two home runs -- in the ninth inning of a loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday.

A three-time All-Star, Davis spent some time on the injured list earlier this season with a strained left oblique.

After signing a three-year, $52 million deal with the Rockies before the 2018 season, Davis finished the year with a National League-leading 43 saves.

Also during his 11-year career, he has pitched for the Tampa Bay Rays (2009-12), Kansas City Royals (2013-16) and Chicago Cubs (2017).
