Rochester's 2023 high school girls swimming and diving teams at a glance

Sep. 6—Co-head coaches: Dale and Megan Magnuson. Assistants: Joscelyn Martin, Anna Schmitt, Greg Andrews (diving), Jennifer Strom (volunteer).

Last year: The Panthers were 9-0 in dual meets, placed first in the Big Nine Conference and Section 1, Class 2A meets and placed 11th in the Class 2A state meet.

Top returners: Sophia Blixt (All-State, All-Conference), Bree Brockman (All-Conference Honorable Mention), Audra Wagstaff (All-Conference HM), Sarah Homme (All-Conference, state qualifier), Chloe Magnuson (All-State, All-Conference), Camrynn Manento (All-Conference, state Qualifier), Paige Manguson (All-Conference HM).

Outlook: The Panthers will be swimming at Century's new pool at the high school, which was completed last winter, for a first season. Century lost a number of talented swimmers from a year ago, but has a strong returning core and should be again the team to beat in the Big Nine Conference and a section contender. Four state qualifiers return in Sophia Blixt, Sarah Homme, Chloe Magnuson and Camrynn Manento, who are all underclassmen. Blixt and Magnuson were part of a relay that placed in the top eight at state and earned All-State honors. Century again has good numbers and a lot of depth. "We are very excited about this season with all the new and returning athletes on the team," coach Dale Magnuson said. "It looks like we have a lot of very talented swimmers and divers who will be very strong. We are excited to see what everyone can do this season."

Head coach: Lauren Kalwasinski. Assistants: Kendrick Bachman, Julia Cordes, Greg Andrews (diving).

Last year: The Rockets were 1-6 in dual meets. They placed ninth out of 12 teams at the Big Nine Conference meet and were seventh in the Section 1, Class 2A meet. JM was 22nd at the Class 2A state meet.

Top returners: Lizzy Gilman, Julia Ogren (All-Conference, All-State), Shannon Penney, Maysen Pettengill.

Outlook: The Rockets have a new coach as Paul Bachman stepped down after 23 seasons of leading the program. Lauren Kalwasinski, a former JM swimmer and a 2013 grad, becomes the Rockets' new coach. One elite swimmer returns, Julia Ogren. Last year as just a freshman, Ogren placed third in the state in the 200 freestyle and fourth in the 100 backstroke and she scored all of the team's points at the state meet. She is one of just four returning key swimmers, however, as the Rockets will again have a very small squad. Depth will be a concern as the team totals just 19 members in grades 7-12. Despite the limited numbers, Kalwasinski said the Rockets have displayed "a really good team atmosphere." Lizzy Gillman is the lone senior on the squad. Eighth-grader Aud Schilling is expected to make an impact. "This is a very hard-working group that will put in the work needed to have real good-end-of-season swims," Kalwasinski said.

Last year: The Spartans were 10-1 in dual meets. They placed second at the Big Nine Conference meet and were third in the Section 1, Class 2A meet. Mayo was 16th at the Class 2A state meet.

Top returners: Madeline Gau (All-Conference, state qualifier), Elise Weingarten (All-Conference, state qualifier), Julie Behnke (state qualifier), Gabby Lee (All-Conference, state qualifier).

Outlook: The Spartans again have high hopes and they should be contenders in the Big Nine Conference and Section 1, Class 2A meets. A large group will give Mayo solid depth. Four state qualifiers return, juniors Julie Behnke and Gabby Lee, sophomore Madeline Gau and freshman Elise Weingarten. Coach Juliet Parlette says the Spartans feature a strong core of underclassmen. Newcomers who could make an impact include Sam Oeltjen, Corrinna Tonn and Emelia Fischer. "We have a lot of 'big meet' swimmers that will have a great dual meet season, and really shine in the championship meets," Parlette said. "We also have a solid and strong core group of up and comers who just keep getting better and better."
