Rob Gronkowski played on Monday night against the Buffalo Bills, but it really didn’t look like the Gronk we’ve seen over the years. That has been the case most of this season.

Gronkowski won’t even make an appearance on “Sunday Night Football” against the Green Bay Packers. He was declared inactive by the Patriots. He is listed as dealing with ankle and back injuries on the Patriots’ injury report. He missed practice Thursday. Running back Sony Michel also was declared inactive, leaving the Patriots thin on offense. Michel has been dealing with a knee injury.

Gronkowski’s health has been an issue all season, and it has clearly been a factor in his play. In seven games Gronkowski has 448 yards and one touchdown. That’s fine for many tight ends, especially this season as a good tight end can be hard to find, but it’s unusual for Gronkowski. He hasn’t scored since Week 1. In four of his past six games he has registered 51 yards or less. Him sitting on Sunday night, when the Patriots will need to score to beat Aaron Rodgers and the Packers, is pretty telling.

It looked like Gronkowski was playing through injuries even when he had played, and it’s probably smart for the Patriots to give him a rest.
