Riverheads girls soccer, softball both pick up huge wins. The Thursday sports roundup

Soccer

Riverheads girls soccer topped Stuarts Draft 3-1 Thursday. Coach Rachel Prater believes its been at least nine years since Riverheads beat Draft in varsity girls soccer.

Jaden Wright, Ella Arehart and Kierstin Doyne all scored goals for the Gladiators. Mackenzie Roller recorded 16 saves in the win.

This is also the first year since 2016 Riverheads has had a junior varsity team. The Gladiators won the JV contest 7-0. Riley Clark, Annie Roller, Grey Powell, Lylah Jordan, Chloe Cypher all scored goals, while Abi Bennington scored twice in the win.

Tennis

Fort Defiance girls tennis has now won two of its last three matches, beating Riverheads 7-2 Thursday.

“The difference this afternoon, we made fewer unforced errors and had a higher first serve percentage," said Fort coach John Edgecomb. "But let’s be clear, this was a battle between the two teams."

Fort is now 2-7 overall and 2-4 in the Shenandoah District, while Riverheads is 7-6, 5-4.

Softball

Riverheads grabbed a huge 12-1 win over Stuarts Draft in softball Thursday. The Cougars came into the game unbeaten in the Shenandoah District and beat Riverheads by nine runs in early April, but the Gladiators got revenge Thursday.

Cheyenne Bottenfield pitched a one-hitter in the win, facing 18 batters and striking out 10. The only hit Draft got off of Bottenfield was in the top of the fifth nning.

Offensively, Riverheads' Maggie Robertson was 2-for-4, Ella Galford was 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs and Payton Patterson went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Riverheads' Emma Ambler hit a two-run homer in the third to begin a five-run inning for Riverheads.

On Wednesday, Buffalo Gap softball swept a doubleheader from Mountain View, 5-2 and 16-2. Gap improved to 8-2 on the season.

In the first game, Caroline Alger had four RBIs and two hits, including a home run, to lead the offense to 16 runs. Gap scored four in the first, five in the third and five more in the fourth along with single runs in the second and fifth. Alger scored four times for the Bison.

Karah Richie had double and scored three runs and Cadence Spradlin had a triple, part of her three hits on the win. Charleigh Phillips tossed all five innings, giving up two runs on two hits and striking out four.

In the second game, freshman Rachel Showalter pitched the complete game, striking out five and giving up just two runs on seven hits.

The Bison offense scored all of its runs in the first two innings, with two in the first and three in the second. Showalter was also strong with the bat, with a hit and two RBIs. She also scored twice. Elissa Caricofe also had a hit and two RBIs in the win.
