New River roundup: Warriors boys and girls win; Woodrow girls fall

Jan. 3—Girls

Wyoming East 64, Princeton 27

Princeton had not played a game in two weeks. Wyoming East, meanwhile, spent the week between Christmas and New Year's Day playing four games.

It looked it.

Kyndal Lusk scored 19 points and Cadee Blackburn 17 in the Warriors' 64-27 victory against the Tigers in the New River CTC Invitational Wednesday at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center.

"We wanted to simulate the state tournament," coach Ryan Davidson said of the pre-New Year's slate of four games in and three straight in one stretch. "We wanted to make it as hard as possible. I don't know if that was a little too extreme. But it was a good experience."

Wyoming East plays Bluefield at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. Princeton plays Shady Spring at 1 p.m. Thursday.

With the score 8-6 midway through the first quarter, Wyoming East's well-oiled machine would outscore Princeton 29-7 the rest of the first half to put the game away.

It didn't stop there.

The Warriors scored the first 12 of the second half before the Tigers brought in five new players with 2:30 remaining.

Princeton was led by Brie Bane's five points.

Wyoming East shot 58 percent for the game, hitting 25 of 43 shots, the largest applause coming when Kaylee Hodges came in late and skied in a 3 off the glass from the wing near the Warriors bench.

Boys

Wyoming East 45,

Princeton 39

Braxton Morgan poured in 13 points in the fourth quarter, in an array of ways, including what he called a key offensive rebound, to lead Wyoming East to a 45-39 win over Princeton.

After not scoring in the first half, the sophomore asserted himself in the final quarter.

"I just gained some confidence after that offensive rebound and I started feeling myself and (the game) just came to me," Morgan said. "After that stickback I was like, 'OK, I've got confidence now.' I started shooting the ball more, I hadn't been shooting as much, and they started falling."

Did they ever.

Morgan scored nine straight for the Warriors to lead the team back from what was a six-point deficit early in the fourth. He gave the team its first lead since early in the third with just over four minutes remaining.

Princeton momentarily retook the lead, but Zach Hunt had a big 3 and then Morgan closed it with two more baskets.

Wyoming East outscored Princeton 9-2 in the final 4:10.

Morgan was 6 of 8 from the floor in the final quarter and he added six rebounds.

Cole Lambert had 14 to lead the Warriors.

Koen Sartin had 12 for Princeton and Zayden Neely 10.

The first half was played at a plodding pace.

In the last 15 seconds of the half, Konnor Fox had a slam dunk and, after a turnover, Lambert beat the buzzer to the basket to give the Warriors a 18-16 lead at the half.

The highlight of the first half was a three-quarter court shot at the end of the first quarter by Princeton's Gavin Stover that gave the Tigers a 9-8 lead.
