Rider grad, former Ohio State great J.T. Barrett signs with CFL's Edmonton Elks

J.T. Barrett’s professional football dreams have taken him to Canada.

The Edmonton Elks of the Canadian Football League announced Friday they had signed the Rider grad and former Ohio State great.

After brief stints with the New Orleans Saints, Seattle Seahawks and Pittsburgh Steelers, Barrett went unsigned this past season, although he participated in a minicamp tryout with the Dallas Cowboys last May. Barrett has not played a professional football game since he played for The Alphas in The Spring League in 2020.

After starring at Rider in the 2009 and 2010 seasons, Barrett signed with Ohio State and rewrote the Buckeye and Big Ten record books. He broke more than 25 Ohio State records, including most total yards in a season (3,851) and most career passing yards (9,434). He also holds the Big Ten records for most career passing touchdowns (104), total touchdowns (147) and offensive yards (12,697).

Barrett has never appeared in a regular season NFL game, spending most of his time on practice squads.

Barrett joins a quarterback room in Edmonton that includes former Oklahoma State Cowboy Taylor Cornelius and Nick Arbuckle from Georgia State. The Elks also recently signed former UTEP quarterback Kal Locksley and former Arizona Wildcat Khalil Tate.

Cornelius was the Elks’ leading passer last season, completing 143 of 247 throws for 1,795 yards, 13 TDs and nine interceptions. The Elks finished last in the West Division with a 3-11 record.
