RI native Harry Cicma running NYC Marathon to raise money for cancer research

Providence native and former ATP Tour world ranked player Harry Cicma is running in the Nov. 6 New York City Marathon to help raise money for pancreatic cancer research.

Cicma, a former Classical High School All-State tennis player and an Emmy Award winning sports anchor, is running to raise money for Project Purple, a Connecticut-based 501(c3) charity devoted to finding a cure for pancreatic cancer.

“It’s an honor to be competing in my first NYC Marathon, and to be representing my Home state of Rhode Island," Cicma wrote in an email. "After nearly two decades of competitive tennis, I wasn’t sure if I would be able to compete in marathons, due to the immense amount of training, but it all started in Rhode Island when I began training with my Dad, by the ocean."

Cicma suffered an achilles injury and, five months ago, was planning to walk the race, but has been doing a full running program (25 miles per week), including running in Narragansett last summer, to prepare for the race. Cicma works as a sports anchor at CBS News and as host of "World Tennis" on NESN TV.
