Rhode Island soccer star Patrick Agyemang becomes highest MLS draft pick in Rams history

University of Rhode Island soccer star Patrick Agyemang heard his name called in Wednesday night's MLS SuperDraft.

Agyemang was selcted 12th overall by Charlotte FC, becoming the highest draft pick in program history and the first Rhode Island player to be drafted since Stavros Zarokostas was taken by the New York Red Bulls in the third round (62nd pick) in the 2020 SuperDraft.

Agyemang recorded 50 points (19 goals, 12 assists) for the Rams in just 37 matches. He was a 2022 First Team All-Conference selection after leading URI in total points (16 points. 7 goals, 2 assists) for the third consecutive season. This month, Agyemang was one of just 44 players nationally to be invited to the MLS College Showcase in Raleigh, N.C.

He has been a three-time A-10 Player of the Week and two-time College Soccer News National Team of the Week selection. In the fall, Agyemang shined at the adidas MLS College Showcase. Held in Raleigh, N.C., the camp featured 44 of the nation's top collegiate players.

Past URI soccer players drafted by the MLS also include Geoff Cameron (2008, Houston Dynamo, third round, 42nd overall); Jeffrey Gonsalves (2007, Toronto, fourth round, 40th overall); Paulo Dos Santos (1996, New England Revolution, third round, 26th overall, as well as 1997, Tampa Bay Mutiny, second round, 18th overall); Danleigh Borman (2008, New York Red Bulls, first round, seventh overall); Sasha Gotsmanov (2005, Colorado Rapids, first round, seventh overall); Andy Williams (2004, Real Salt Lake, supplemental draft, second overall).
