The Rewind: West bests East on gridiron, UAA volleyball heats up, and Alaskans in pro sports find success

Sep. 19—Welcome to The Rewind, a weekly digest that puts a spotlight on the biggest stories and best performances from Alaska's world of sports.

The sixth week of the 2023 Alaska high school football season featured rivalry games at the Division I and II levels and a Division III contender stayed hot in a rare Sunday showdown. On the college sports scene, the University of Alaska Anchorage volleyball team bounced back in a big way over the weekend. On the national stage, three Alaskans on NFL teams were in uniform in Week 2, and a professional hoopster signed with a new NBA team. Also a former prep volleyball standout made history at the collegiate level and a professional endurance athlete conquered a mountain trail and steep elevation.

Headlines and highlights

The game of the week in high school football certainly lived up to the hype for the first three quarters when Bettye Davis East Anchorage hosted crosstown rival West Anchorage. The Cook Inlet Conference clash and potential playoff preview unfolded like a heavyweight bout with both teams matching each other blow for blow until the Eagles were able to distance themselves late. A pair of fourth-quarter turnovers proved to be the turning point and senior quarterback Azariah Atonio was able to lead West to a statement victory over his former team.

"It means everything," he said. "I transferred over here looking for a fresh start, and that's what they gave me. Every opportunity was taken and we took off from there."

In other rivalry gridiron action, Service pulled away from South to claim the Southside Cup for the second year in a row on Friday night, and Eagle River shut out Chugiak in a Thursday night edition of the Battle of the Bridge. Elsewhere in Division II, Soldotna continued its dominant start to the season and stayed undefeated by blowing out West Valley with its fifth straight game of scoring 60 or more points.

Red-hot Barrow had to have its matchup with Kodiak pushed back to Sunday because weather complications forced a delay in the Kodiak team's flight. That didn't bother the Whalers at all as they would still go on to notch their fourth victory in a row in lopsided fashion over the Bears and improve to 4-1 on the year.

In 9-man football action the Seward Seahawks remained unbeaten and improved to 5-0 after beating Nikiski by double figures for the second time this season on Saturday night.

Three-time reigning Cook Inlet Conference flag football champion Dimond remained undefeated through the first five weeks of the season with another pair of shutout victories for the third week in a row. The first came against Chugiak on Tuesday night and the second came over Bartlett on Wednesday as the Lynx finished the week with a massive point differential of 67-0.

The East volleyball team stayed undefeated in regular-season action with a pair of 3-1 victories over West and South last week to extend its winning streak to seven in a row. Meanwhile, defending champion Dimond rattled off two straight-set sweep victories over Bartlett and South after suffering its first defeat of the regular season to the Thunderbirds a week prior.

In other prep volleyball action, Service extended the CIC's second-longest winning streak to four in a row with a sweep of Chugiak last Tuesday and a five-set victory over Palmer on Thursday. Against the Moose, the Cougars were led in kills by Paige Miller with 11. in digs by Rylie Widener with 12, in blocks by Patri Ferran with four, and in assists by Kiara Iloilo with 28.

Cross-country runners from all four grade classifications across the Anchorage School District faced off and competed against their peers from the same grade in the annual Class Race at Bartlett High onpast Friday. Luke Shaw and Nathan Vander Lugt of Eagle River are teammates and best friends and braved the muddy course together on their way to claiming first and second place in the boys sophomore division race.

"One of the main things that helps me in my time is (Vander Lugt)," Shaw said. "During the race he'll always push ahead of me a little bit and I'm like, 'OK, I have to speed up,' even if I'm dying."

The prep swimming season raged on and among this past Friday's dual meet action, the defending Division I state champion Dimond girls bested reigning Region IV champ South. The Lynx outscored the Wolverines 101-74 and their boys completed the team by outscoring their South boys by an even wider margin of 131-40.

On the college scene, the UAA volleyball team rattled off four straight victories including the first three in three-set sweeps over the weekend at the Reddie-Tiger Invitational in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. Junior outside hitter Bethany Tuchardt was integral to the Seawolves success during the tournament and earned Great Northwest Athletic Conference's volleyball offensive player of the week as a result. She averaged 3.31 kills per set on .475 hitting, hit .429 or better in all four contests, and recorded career-highs in kills on back-to-back days with 14 and 16 kill performances.

The Anchorage Wolverines had the strongest showing of the three Alaska teams that took part in the annual NAHL Showcase that took place at the NSC Super Rink in Minnesota this past week. First-year head coach Nick Walters guided his team to a 2-1-1 record at the four-day event thanks in larger part to the contributions from Belarusian forward Fedya Nikalayenya who recorded a team-leading five goals.

All three of the Alaska-born rookie players in the NFL were in uniform in Week 2. Two of them saw action on the field and two of the teams were victorious. Anchorage's Brandon Pili played five snaps in the Miami Dolphins' 24-17 win over the New England Patriots with two on defense and three on the field-goal block unit. Palmer's Malaesala Aumavae-Laulu made his regular-season debut in the Baltimore Ravens' 27-24 win over the Cincinnati Bengals although he was only active as a backup and didn't see the field. Anchorage's Tyree Wilson played a season-high 38 snaps and recorded a career-high two total tackles, including his first solo in the Las Vegas Raiders' 38-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Born in Fairbanks and raised in Anchorage, Daishen Nix is joining the Minnesota Timberwolves on a one-year deal. The 21-year-old spent his first two seasons in the NBA with the Houston Rockets with time on their G-League and active roster appearing in 81 games and making seven starts last season. Thus far in his career, he has totaled 226 points, 172 assists, 131 rebounds, and 46 steals according to Basketball Reference.

Eagle River's Cheyenne Young made program history for the Husson University volleyball team in a five-set loss to Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Thursday. The former Chugiak prep standout became the first player for the Eagles to record a triple-double in a match when she recorded a career-high 17 assists, a season-high 13 kills and 10 digs.

Soldotna's Allie Ostrander overcame the arduous altitude adjustment that comes with competing thousands of feet above sea level when she finished 20th in the Pikes Peak Ascent and Marathon on Saturday. The professional endurance and mountain runner completed the 13.3-mile trail race in 3 hours, 4 minutes, 52 seconds.
