The Rewind: State wrestling features historic results, Rosie Brennan wins silver at World Cup and both UAA basketball teams have success on the road
Dec. 18—The 2023 high school wrestling postseason officially wrapped up this past weekend with wrestlers from across the Last Frontier trying to make their dreams come true at the state tournament. South Anchorage defended the Division I boys title while the Soldotna girls and Seward boys made history. On the college sports scene, the University of Alaska Anchorage women's and men's basketball teams were victorious Sunday away from home. Outside the state, several Alaska athletes had impressive showings, both nationally and internationally.
Headlines and highlights
Program history was made in all three divisions at the 2023 ASAA high school state wrestling championship tournament last weekend. The South Anchorage boys won back-to-back team titles for the first time while the Soldotna girls and Division II Seward boys won the first ever for their respective schools after Saturday's finals matches.

Although they only had three individual champions crowned among their eight total finalists, South had its successful title defense well in hand before finals got underway. The Wolverines finished with 315 combined points which was 45 more than the Fairbanks-based Student Wrestling Development Program, the next closest team with 270 points.
"It was a tough night in the finals with some individual matchups, but the team kind of wrapped it up before the finals and it was a team win," South coach Randy Hanson said. "It feels good, not great, but back-to-back is something to celebrate."
Thanks to going a perfect 5-of-5 in the finals that included a trio of upsets by their lower-seeded female wrestlers, Soldotna not only claimed the first team title in school history but its 212 combined points set a state tournament record.
"It's been awesome and a long road," Soldotna head coach Peter Dickinson said. "I've coached a lot of these girls for a long time, and it's been great. They've been working hard and deserve every bit of it."
Seward sent four wrestlers to the finals and came away with three champions and finished with seven top six placers. Prior to this year, the Seahawks had never finished higher than 10th in overall team scoring at state since the tournament's realignment in the 2017-18 school year. Their 184 combined points were 47 points more than Haines, which was the runner-up with 137 points.

The 2023-2024 high school basketball season got underway last week with tournaments taking place all over the state and one of the former premiere events bounced back in a major way this year as the 44th annual Service Tip-Off Classic tournament was able to grow and feature three California teams and seven from the different regions and levels of competition from around the Last Frontier.

The UAA women's basketball team is in the midst of its longest winning streak of the season thus far after notching a third straight win by pulling away late from Stanislaus State in a 60-46 victory Sunday. The Seawolves were led in scoring by junior guards Jazzpher Evans and Senya Rabouin, who tied for the team lead with 13 points and were the only players to reach double figures.
"We weren't executing well offensively until the fourth quarter but our defense was terrific for the majority of the game," UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy stated. "We also did a great job of crashing the boards, and we got a huge lift with (Nessa Walsh's) all-around play. Jazz really hit her stride late offensively too, and that really helped us pull away."
The UAA men's basketball team got back on track in its first game back from a two-week break from action with a 51-49 win over the University of Texas-Tyler on Sunday. While guards Dillon Barrientos and Tyson Gilbert led the Seawolves in scoring with 11 points apiece, it was clutch free throws by Anchorage's Jaron Williams with less than two minutes left in the game that proved to be the difference.
"We did not play particularly well, but we did play hard," UAA head coach Rusty Osborne stated. "With (reserve point guard) Trey Evans out (illness) and Dillon getting in foul trouble, we got out of sync offensively. However, we missed a lot of open shots and that made things seem worse. Hopefully we can control our adrenaline tomorrow and shoot like we're capable."
The UAA ski team narrowly lost the 2023 Nordic Cup to instate rival UAF by the slim margin of 1:39 but sophomore Matt Seline managed to win the U-20 race and finished 10th overall to lead the Seawolves on the final day of the first Super Tour at Kincaid Park in 20 years. He covered the 10-kilometer freestyle course in 24:39.1 and teammate Ari Endestad was just one spot behind him in 24:44.5.

The Anchorage Wolverines nearly came away with a three-game road series sweep over the weekend but still were able to go 2-1 against the Springfield Jr. Blues. They were able to win the first two games by scoring a quartet of goals in each on Thursday and Friday but couldn't repeat the feat for a third time which led to them dropping their Saturday game 3-2. The team's leading scorer over the three games was forward Danny Bagnole with four goals that included a three-goal hat trick in the first game. Anchorage's Camden Shasby recorded his first two goals since joining the Wolverines last month.

In the team's historic 63-21 blowout win Thursday over its AFC West rival, the Los Angeles Chargers, The first-round edge defender recorded a pair of tackles, including a solo, and also recovered one of four fumbles that the defense forced.
Fairbanks' Daishen Nix recorded an impressive double-double Thursday in the G League as he led the Iowa Wolves with 10 assists and three steals as well as finishing second on the team in scoring with 22 points in a decisive 118-115 win over the Cleveland Charge. The 21-year-old Minnesota Timberwolves prospect followed it up the next night by leading the team with seven assists and a 15-point scoring effort in a 136-113 win over the same opponent.

Anchorage's Alissa Pili averaged a point for every minute she played in the University of Utah women's basketball team's 96-60 victory over Southern Utah University on Saturday. In 20 minutes of action, the former Dimond High multi-sport star recorded a team-leading 20 points and finished second in rebounds with five boards as the Utes routed the Thunderbirds.
Anchorage's Damarion Delaney and Jahbez Sellers went off for big scoring outings on the Spokane Community College men's basketball team this past week. The two former Bettye Davis East prep stars recorded double figures in each of the Bigfoot's three games from Thursday to Saturday. Sellers had a pair of explosive 29-point outings against South Puget Sound and Portland while Delaney tied his season-high by dropping 32 points against Olympic College in Spokane's only win of the past week.
Anchorage's Mia 'Uhila had her second-highest scoring outing of the season Saturday with 17 points in the Portland State University women's basketball team's 74-63 loss to the University of San Francisco.
