The Rewind: South sweeps regional wrestling titles; UAA women's basketball team ends losing streak; Schoonmaker earns podium at XC World Cup
Dec. 12—Welcome to The Rewind, a weekly digest that puts a spotlight on the biggest stories and best performances from Alaska's world of sports.
The 2023 high school wrestling postseason got underway last weekend with wrestlers from across the Last Frontier vying for bids to this week's state tournament. South Anchorage won the boys and girls region titles in Anchorage. On the college sports scene, the University of Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team got back on track but the men's hockey team continued to struggle. Outside the state, several Alaskan athletes had impressive showings, both nationally and internationally.
Headlines and highlights
For the first time in program history, the South Anchorage high school girls wrestling team won a regional title — despite only having two champions crowned. Sophomore McKinley Reid pinned Heryzon Hutchison of Bartlett at 114 pounds and junior Jessailah Thammavongsa pinned Venice Cabugao of Bartlett at 165 pounds in their respective finals matches. The Wolverines girls team totaled 72 points followed by Service with 59 and Dimond with 50.
"We finally had the numbers to make a push and they wrestled really well and got it done," South head coach Randy Hanson said. "It's nice to add a girls region title to the trophy case."
The South boys team cruised to its 12th straight region title by racking up a combined 518 points which was 108 points more than runner-up Eagle River (237) and third place Bettye Davis East (173) combined. The Wolverines had 13 wrestlers make the finals, nine of which were crowned champion.
"South is a wrestling school and we're kind of proving that year after year," Hanson said. "It's in the culture here all the way from our youth club up to middle school and high school. We keep churning them out and we've got the numbers."
East Anchorage senior Deshawn Barbee claimed his fourth straight regional title with a 25-11 major decision victory over Levi Shivers of South.
"It feels great," Barbee said. "The past four years I've put in the work and I'm just happy to have that fourth region championship by my name. This is what I expected of myself and now my goal is to win my first state championship."
West Anchorage sophomore Lilyanne Oldham capped off the regional tournament in her first year of wrestling with a title after an intense finals match at 126 pounds. It had to be stopped briefly due to her having a bloody nose and went down to the wire but she was able to prevail in a 4-3 decision victory after slipping out of the grasps of Layla Saelee of East in the final seconds of the third period.
"I just knew I had to get up. There were 20 seconds left and if I got up, she wouldn't have been able to shoot after that so if I got up, I'd win," Oldham said.
Teammates and siblings, Spencer and Annika Johnson of Chugiak, each claimed regional titles. Annika is a sophomore and came in first in the girls' 138-pound weight division with a 16-1 tech fall win over Nevaeh Copeland of East in the finals. Spencer had one of the most exciting matches of the boys finals and came in first in the 215-pound weight division with a 3-1 victory over Hayden Martin of South.
The UAA women's basketball team finally snapped its six-game losing skid with a pair of home victories over Pennsylvania Western University-Clarion. The Seawolves dominated in both games, outscoring the Golden Eagles by 44 points on Friday and 45 points on Sunday. The team's leading scorer over the weekend was junior foward/center Tori Hollingshead, who recorded double figures in each game and compiled 25 points between the two. Junior guard Jazzpher Evans was a close second with 23 combined points and also recorded double figures in each game.
"Our shots weren't going down for the most part, but we were able to offset that by getting a lot of transition baskets and locking down on the defensive end," UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy said in a statement Sunday. "I love that we were able to win two games by wide margins without having anyone score more than 13 points all weekend. That really goes to show the balance and depth that we hoped to have with this year's team."
The UAA hockey team dropped both of its road games against the University of Massachusetts over the weekend to increase its losing skid to five in a row to close out the 2023 portion of its regular season. The Seawolves managed to score a pair of goals in each game but lost by scores of 11-2 and 3-2. They had four players record a goal, including Anchorage's Maximilion Helgeson who scored their first of the weekend.
The Anchorage Wolverines played in a pair of shootouts over the weekend as they split their road series with the Janesville Jets, dropping the first 3-2 on Friday and taking the second by the same score on Saturday. The team's leading scorer over the two games was forward Oliver Salo with three goals but it was defenseman Brock Devlin who secured their shootout victory by finding the back of the net twice.
Alaska stars shining Outside
Anchorage's JC Schoonmaker made it to the podium at the World Cup for the first time in his career on Saturday after taking third place in the classic sprint final in Östersund, Sweden. The Olympian and former UAA skier finished in 3 minutes, 16.86 seconds, which was less than five seconds off the pace set by Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo of Norway.

Anchorage's Tyree Wilson had one of the best performances of his rookie season in the Las Vegas Raiders' 3-0 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 14 of the NFL season. The seventh overall pick in the 2023 draft tied his single game high in total tackles with four, including one for a loss, recorded a quarterback hit and his second sack of the season to increase his total to 2.5 through 13 games.
Fairbanks' Daishen Nix scored 32 points in his G League debut for the Iowa Wolves on Friday in a 119-109 win over the Grand Rapids Gold. The 21-year-old two-way player for the Minnesota Timberwolves scored a whopping 24 of his points in the first half alone and finished with eight rebounds as well. Two days later, he finished second on the team in scoring with 16 points in a 123-102 loss to the Gold on Sunday.
Anchorage's Alissa Pili scored a career-high 37 points in the University of Utah women's basketball team's 78-69 loss to the top-ranked University of South Carolina on Sunday during the Hoophall Women's Basketball Showcase in Uncasville, Connecticut. Even though the Gamecocks came out on top and handed the Utes their second loss of the season, Pili was the star of the nationally televised show that was broadcast on ESPN. She went 15-of-23 from the field including 3-of-6 on 3-pointers in 28 minutes of action. It marked her second 30-plus point scoring outing of the season. Both came within the last week as she dropped 31 in a 74-48 win over Saint Joseph's University on Thursday, earning her fourth career Pac-12 Player of the Week honors in the process.
Anchorage's Edefuan Ulofoshio was named All-Pac-12 First Team on Tuesday, just days after being voted the recipient of the University of Washington football team's 116th annual Guy Flaherty Award for most inspirational player by his teammates. The former South High standout helped lead the Huskies to an undefeated 13-0 record, including a Pac-12 Championship and a berth in the College Football Playoff as the No. 2 seed behind only Michigan. The senior off-ball linebacker finished the season with the second-most tackles (83), solo tackles (53) and tackles for loss (six) and also recorded three sacks and his first career touchdown on an interception return. Washington will take on No. 3 Texas (12-1) on Jan. 1 in the Sugar Bowl for a chance to advance to the national title game.
Anchorage's Damarion Delaney scored 30 points in an 88-72 win for the Spokane Community College Bigfoot over the Clackamas Community College Cougars on Friday. The former Bettye Davis East Anchorage two-sport star went 10-of-15 from the field, including 5-of-8 from behind the arc. In a 78-69 loss to Linn-Benton the following day, he led the team with 16 points.
Anchorage's Isaiah Saville helped lead the Henderson Silver Knights of the American Hockey League to a 5-1 road win over the San Jose Barracuda on Friday. He was terrific in his 2023 debut after beginning the season on injured reserve by stopping 31-of-32 shots.

ASAA state championship tournament at Alaska Airlines Center, Friday and Saturday
The 2023 high school season will conclude this weekend with the two-day state tournament where the top wrestlers from boys Division I and II as well as the girls division will converge on Anchorage at the Alaska Airlines Center starting on Friday and wrapping up Saturday with the finals.

Cougar Tip-Off, Wednesday-Saturday
The 2023 season will officially get underway with the annual tournament hosted by Service High School and will feature teams from within and even outside of the state. The teams in attendance include Kodiak, Valley View (California), Houston, Thunder Mountain, Barrow, Roosevelt (California), Hesperia (California), Mountain City and Tikigaq (Point Hope).
Hockey
West v. South at Ben Boeke, Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
Two of the top teams in the Cook Inlet Conference will face off this weekend at Ben Beoke when the Eagles and Wolverines play each other for the first time this season. West remains the only undefeated team in the conference at 5-0-1 heading into this week's action and South suffered its first loss of the season last week in a rivalry game with Service to fall to 3-1.

Anchorage Winterstart Super Tour Races Series
There will be plenty of action on the trails at Kincaid Park this week starting Tuesday and running through Sunday. There will be a freestyle sprint race Tuesday and a classic individual 10K race Wednesday. There are also Besh Cup races over the weekend, including a classic sprint race Saturday and a freestyle mass start 10K race Sunday.
