The Rewind: Alaska skiers shine in World Cup relays, UAA men's basketball team has winning streak snapped and UAF wins Governor's Cup
Dec. 4—Welcome to The Rewind, a weekly digest that puts a spotlight on the biggest stories and best performances from Alaska's world of sports.
One of the final big regular-season high school wrestling tournaments in the state took place in Anchorage last weekend and saw the reigning Division I boys state champions emerge victorious in tightly contested finals. On the college sports scene, it was a rough weekend for University of Alaska Anchorage athletics on the men's and women's side as the Seawolves had a nationally ranked team falling from the ranks of the unbeaten. Outside the state, several Alaskan athletes had impressive showings, both nationally and internationally.
Headlines and highlights
The 2023 Grace Grizzly Shakedown essentially played out the same way the Division I boys state tournament did last year with defending champion South Anchorage edging out Soldotna 246-237.5 points to secure its third tournament team title of the season. Nearly half of the championship bouts, 5 of 12, featured matchups between Wolverines and Stars. In the end, it was South that finished with the most individual champions crowned with four followed by Soldotna with three.
"Overall, the team wrestled well," South coach Randy Hanson said. "There will always be some minor fixes we need to address, but that is the reason we compete, to challenge ourselves and learn from those mistakes. We weren't too worried about the team race for the tournament, since our team wasn't at full strength. I was more focused on seeing how our younger kids would do stepping into the varsity tournament, how some of our veterans would bounce back after Lancer (Smith Tournament), and how offensively and aggressively we wrestled."
The 2023 2A state high school volleyball championship took place at Palmer High School last week and concluded Saturday with a pair of matches between Birchwood Christian and Susitna Valley. Susitna avenged its Friday night loss to Birchwood in a four-set victory but the Warriors bounced back in the single set match with a 30-25 victory to secure the state title.
In prep hockey action, both South and West remain undefeated. The Wolverines shut out rival Dimond 1-0 on Tuesday and Colony 3-0 on Friday while the Eagles edged out Wasilla 3-2 on Saturday. The co-op of Bartlett and Bettye Davis East snapped a 21-game losing streak for the Golden Bears with a 5-2 win over Eagle River last Tuesday.
The West Anchorage cross-country ski team came in first in both of the Class A divisions at the Snowball Skate Sprint race at Service High on Saturday. The Eagles bested the runner-up Cougars in each race with the boys winning with a cumulative lowest time of 23:22.1 to 23:39.0. In the girls race, the Eagles won with a mark of 28:07.7 to 28:18.9 for Service. Murphy Kimball of West won the boys race with a time of 5:38.5 and was one of five Eagles to finish in the top 10. Three Cougars were top 10 led by runner-up Elias Soule with a time of 5:45.2. Olivia Soderstrom of Service won the girls race with a finish of 6:40.3 and was one of three Cougars in the top 10. The Eagles had five in the top 10 led by Piper Sears with a second-place time of 6:56.5.
Both of the UAA basketball teams got their first taste of Great Northwest Athletic Conference action last week with a pair of road games against Montana State Billings and Seattle Pacific, and both went 0-2. It marked the first time that the men's team experienced defeat after beginning the season with a hot 8-0 start that led to its first national ranking since 2016. The women's team has now lost four straight. Leading the Seawolves in scoring on the men's side in the two games was senior forward Sawyer Storms with 26 points. Junior guard Senya Rabouin was the top scorer on the women's team with 44 points.
"We did not defend in the first half like we are capable of," said UAA men's head coach Rusty Osborne after the team suffered it's first loss. "We did defend well in the second half, but we were very poor offensively. Some of it was execution, some of it was them, and a lot of it was missing open shots and layups that we usually make."
The UAA men's hockey team hosted UAF for a two-game series in the second leg of the annual Governor's Cup. The Nanooks shut out the Seawolves on Friday night powered by a superb special teams and beat them 3-1 on Saturday night. Anchorage's Maximilion Helgeson scored the lone goal for the home team in the third period off a power play, marking just their second in their last five games.
"Just clinching the Governor's Cup is huge," UAF head coach Erik Largen said after Saturday's win. "That's a big thing for our campus and community but obviously the next two games (against UAA) are going to be important and whenever we face off against each other, they're going to bring a great effort. It's going to be another battle when we play back in Fairbanks."

The Anchorage Wolverines dropped a pair of games over the weekend to the Kenai River Brown Bears by identical scores of 4-3. They lost on the road in a shootout Friday night and in their last home game of the 2023 portion of their schedule, they nearly overcame a 3-0 deficit after being sparked by a pair of goals from defenseman Jackson Stimple.
"We got down early after a tough start but I like the grit and battle back," Stimple said. "We just couldn't come all the way back and sometimes that's going to happen. You're not going to win them all."

Alaska stars shining Outside
Anchorage's Rosie Brennan of the Alaska Pacific University nordic ski team teamed up with fellow Olympian Jessie Diggins to carry the U.S. women to a third-place finish at the World Cup relay races in Gallivare, Sweden, on Sunday. They skied the classic legs of the race and the team completed the 4×7.5-kilometer race in a time of 1:20:46.8, winning a bronze medal in the process.
"Relay podiums are always special," Brennan told U.S. Ski & Snowboard. "It's always fun to have a joint effort out there and everyone shares the emotion."
On the men's side, the relay team featuring a trio of Alaskans in Gus Schumacher, Scott Patterson and Zanden McMullen snapped a 20-year drought of not finishing in the top five by coming in fifth with a time of 1:12:36.0.
"I think being such good friends and being so close to your teammates," McMullen said in a release from U.S. Ski & Snowboard. "It relieves a lot of pressure and feels very familiar."

Anchorage's Alissa Pili had a couple of 20-plus-point scoring outings this past week as she led the University of Utah women's basketball team to its fourth and fifth consecutive victories. The former Dimond High star led the Utes with 21 points in a 100-44 win over Carroll College last Tuesday and 23 points in an 87-68 win over Brigham Young University.
Anchorage's Edefuan Ulofoshio helped lead the University of Washington football team to a thrilling 34-31 victory over the University of Oregon on Friday in the Pac-12 championship game. The senior starting inside linebacker formerly of South High finished second on the team in total tackles with six and solo tackles with three. With their second win over the Ducks this season, the Huskies punched their ticket to the College Football Playoffs. On Sunday, Washington was revealed as No. 2 in the final four standings and will take on the University of Texas on New Year's Day at 4:45 p.m. Alaska Standard Time in a game that will be broadcasted on ESPN.
Anchorage's Damarion Delaney averaged 20.6 points over the weekend for the Spokane Community College men's basketball team, which went 1-2 in a trio of games from Friday to Sunday. The former Bettye Davis East standout led the team in scoring in its Saturday loss to Chemeketa with 23 points and in its Sunday loss to Portland with 20 points. His fellow Big Foot and former Thunderbirds teammate Jahbez Sellers led the team in scoring with 21 points in their Friday win over Lane College.
Chugiak's Hannah Shaha led the Run AK team to a runner-up finish in the open division at the Nike Cross Regional at the Eagle Island XC Course in Boise, Idaho. The sophomore and reigning Division I state cross-country champion finished 17th overall out of a field of 898 by covering the 5-kilometer course in a time of 19:20. On the boys side, Palmer's Tobias Buchanan of Colony, who finished runner-up at state, recorded a personal best with a time of 16:24 in his final prep race and came in 107th in a championship field of 214.

The 2023 postseason will officially get underway this weekend with regional tournaments taking place across the state. Reigning Divsion I state champion South Anchorage will host the Cook Inlet Conference schools on its home mats as the Wolverines attempt to win their 12th straight regional title as well as for bids to next week's state tournament.

Classic Invitational (Limited) 7.5K / Open-3K, Saturday at Beach Lake at 11 a.m.
The second race of the 2023 season and the last of this calendar year will take place this weekend out at Beach Lake and will be hosted by Chugiak and Eagle River.
Hockey
South v. Service, Wednesday at Ben Boeke, 6:30 p.m.
This midweek Cook Inlet Conference clash will be between rivals. The Wolverines will be looking to stay undefeated and improve to 4-0 while the Cougars will be trying to avoid dropping their fourth in a row by notching their second win of the season and the first over a CIC opponent.

The Seawolves will be back in action on their home court for the final time in 2023 for a two-game nonconference series with the Golden Eagles where they will be looking to get back on track and snap their recent losing skid.
