Retired NFL player Mike McGlynn is new head football coach at Lake Minneola High
MINNEOLA — Lake Minneola High School announced Wednesday that it has hired Mike McGlynn, a retired eight-year professional player in the NFL, as its new head football coach.
McGlynn was a four-year starter at the University of Pittsburgh, where he earned his bachelor’s degree, and he started his NFL career in 2008 when he was drafted in the fourth round by the Philadelphia Eagles.
He went on to play for the Cincinnati Bengals, Indianapolis Colts, Kansas City Chiefs and New Orleans Saints, the release says.
“I got to play with some of the best men as teammates and was coached by some of the greatest leaders,” he told school officials.
McGlynn started his coaching career while he was still in the NFL, working with Coach Tom Shaw Speed and Performance. “I was able to share my love of the game to help guide and develop young athletes,” he said.
Since retiring from the NFL in 2016, McGlynn has served as an offensive coordinator and offensive line/run game coordinator in multiple programs across Central Florida.
He met with Lake Minneola parents and players on May 8, and principal William Roberts said the team, parents and the entire school family are excited to have McGlynn onboard.
“He is in it for the right reasons, the support of our students and helping these young athletes reach their full potential,” Roberts said. “I could not be more pleased.”
McGlynn said he is looking forward to working with the team. “My goal is to utilize the game of football as a vehicle to develop and educate the next generation of young men towards achieving their goals,” he said. “I am excited to be named the next head football coach at Lake Minneola High School and look forward to serving the Minneola community.”
