Results from high school tennis quadrangular at Brandon and boys tennis tourney at Milbank

BRANDON — Watertown High School's girls tennis team went 2-0-1 in season-opening duals on Thursday.

The Arrows beat Yankton 7-2 and Brandon Valley 5-4 before splitting with Rapid City Stevens 4-4.

"It was a very long day of tennis. We had three matches that each lasted about three hours and we just finished up at 8:15 p.m.," said Watertown head coach Ryan Zink. "I'm really proud of the girls because that's a tough way to start."

Leyla Meester (second flight) and Faith Berg (third flight) each were 3-0 in singles and Sophia Nichols (fourth flight) and Karlie Schulte (sixth flight) each 2-1. Ellie Zink and Meester combined to go 3-0 in the first flight of doubles. Cayda Weiss and Schulte went 2-1 at No. 3 doubles.

"We played well against Yankton to get things going and then came out a little sluggish in doubles against Brandon Valley," said Zink. "Stevens is a great team and we ended in a 4-4 tie."

The Arrows have a busy week on the road next week, playing Sioux Falls O'Gorman and Sioux Falls Washington on Wednesday, Sioux Falls Jefferson on Friday and Brookings and Aberdeen Central on Saturday in the Brookings Jamboree.
