Republican Herald wins state, national awards

Jul. 8—The Republican Herald won five awards in the 2023 Keystone Media Awards sponsored by the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association.

Also, the Republican Herald won two top 10 awards in the national Associated Press Sports Editors contest.

In the Keystone competition, the Republican Herald competes against papers throughout the state with circulations of 10,000 to 19,999.

Winners were:

—Sports editor Leroy Boyer won first place in the Sports Breaking News/Event Coverage category for coverage of the PIAA state swimming meet and second place in Sports Beat Reporting for his coverage leading up to the meet.

—Multimedia editor David McKeown won first place for Breaking News Photo for his picture of a Middletown, New York, man walking down the middle of Interstate 81 carrying a suitcase with the smoking aftermath of the March 2022 deadly pileup behind him.

—Photographer Jacqueline Dormer won honorable mention in Features Videos for "The Last Route," where she documented the final day on the job after 29 years for Pottsville mail carrier Greg Andregic.

—Staff writer Ron Devlin and correspondent Lisa Von Ahn won second place for Business or Consumer story for a package of stories, Devlin's, "131 years: Courthouse clock still telling time," and Von Ahn's historical look, "Daylight saving time divided city."

"Clearly the greatest judges out there are our readers, and we value them more than ever. But it's also very gratifying to know that the work we do stacks up well against our peers across the state," said Larry Holeva, executive editor of Times-Shamrock Communications, the family-owned, Scranton-based company that owns the Republican Herald. "I'm proud of the individual award winners on the staff and throughout the company as well as the editors and colleagues who lead, edit, manage and develop these well-decorated journalists."

In Division C of the APSE contest, the Republican Herald sports department won a Top 10 print section award for the second straight year. Those national awards were unveiled in February.

Also for APSE, Dormer won her second award in the past three years, again winning a Top 10 for Action Photo for her shot of Schuylkill Haven's Mitchell Zimmerman airborne with arms and legs spread while trying to elude the tag of Nativity catcher Fletcher Eades during a Schuylkill League Division II baseball game on May 3, 2022.
