Reports: Penguins acquire C Brassard from Senators
The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired center Derick Brassard from the Ottawa Senators, according to multiple reports Friday.
In exchange for Brassard, the Penguins sent a 2018 first-round pick, defenseman Ian Cole and goalie prospect Filip Gustavsson to Ottawa, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.
The deal comes three days before the NHL's trade deadline.
Brassard talked about the speculation regarding his future after the Senators' 4-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday night.
"We all have phones and social media and turn on the TV. It's part of the business and we've all been there before," said Brassard, who had a goal and an assist against the Lightning. "There's nothing you can do. You just have to go out there and play. Whatever is going to happen Monday is going to happen. You just move on after."
Brassard, 30, has recorded 38 points (18 goals, 20 assists) in 58 games with the Senators this season. He has two years left on his contract, with a salary cap hit of $5 million per year.
Cole, who will be an unrestricted free agent after this season, played 218 regular-season games and 54 playoff contests in Pittsburgh, winning two Stanley Cups. He likely will not stay in Ottawa and will be flipped to a contending team, a source told the Post-Gazette.
Cole has scored three goals with 10 assists in 47 games with the Penguins in 2017-18.
