Report: Wink Martindale out of running for Colts head coach job

The Indianapolis Colts are expected to announce their new head coach in the coming days, and it appears New York Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale isn’t expected to be among the final candidates.

Though Martindale did get a second interview as one of eight candidates to do so, he was reportedly informed by the Colts that he’s no longer considered a candidate for the head coach vacancy, according to Mike Silver of Bally Sports.

Martindale was an interesting candidate, but his profile is one that the league has been shying away from over the last few years. It makes sense that the Colts may prefer bringing in a younger offensive mind, especially with a rookie quarterback expected to be coming into the building.

The Colts still have six other known candidates who appear to be in the running including Philadelphia Eagles OC Shane Steichen, Los Angeles Rams DC Raheem Morris, Cincinnati Bengals OC Brian Callahan, Detroit Lions DC Aaron Glenn, Green Bay Packers STC Rich Bisaccia and interim head coach Jeff Saturday.

Considering the fluidity of the situation, everything regarding the head coach search should be taken with a grain of salt until the team announces the move officially.
