Report: Saints believe Michael Thomas, Jarvis Landry dodged ‘serious’ injuries

They aren’t out of the woods yet — the team will conduct further tests after settling into their digs in London — but NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Monday that the New Orleans Saints believe veteran wide receivers Michael Thomas and Jarvis Landry escaped Week 3’s game without serious injuries.

Landry is managing a foot injury (the Saints initially announced it was an ankle problem) that Rapoport says mostly leaves him feeling some soreness and discomfort. He twisted his leg adjusting to an off-target pass from Jameis Winston on a crossing route against the Carolina Panthers and needed assistance leaving the field. It’s not much, but it feels helpful to note that the Saints first said Landry would be probably to reenter the game, then questionable, and later doubtful, but they never ruled him out entirely.

And Thomas has a new toe problem, which Rapoport adds is not affecting the same foot as his frustrating ankle injury. Thomas was seen going in and out of the medical tent on Sunday and testing his injured toe while jogging on the sidelines, with the team initially saying he was questionable to return before later downgrading his status to “doubtful” along with Landry. He’s looked like his old self through these three games so far, and should continue to play a major role on offense when healthy.

So that’s reassuring to see, though we’ll have to wait for the week’s first injury report to publish on Wednesday before we can get a better idea of their status. New Orleans finished the Panthers game without four of their top five receivers — in addition to injuries for Landry and Thomas, Tre’Quan Smith was knocked out of the contest with a concussion, and returns specialist Deonte Harty suffered a setback in pregame warmups that unexpectedly sidelined him.
