Report: Gundy to stay at Oklahoma State; Tennessee eyes Strong
Mike Gundy has turned down an offer to take the Tennessee coaching job and will remain at Oklahoma State, according to reports.
The Cowboys coach had received interest from Tennessee regarding its vacancy, CBSSports.com and ESPN.com reported Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Yahoo Sports reported that Louisville's Charlie Strong is the Volunteers' top target but that the Cardinals are doing their best to make to keep him with an upgrade to his current contract that could make him one of the highest-paid coaches in the country.
Tennessee wants to hire a new coach by the end of the week, sources told CBSSports.com.
Gundy, 45, has compiled a 66-35 record in eight seasons with the Cowboys, including a school-record 12 wins in 2011 and its first BCS bowl berth. The former Oklahoma State quarterback's team concluded the 2012 regular season with a 7-5 record.
According to CBSSports.com, Gundy has been considered for other coaching vacancies around the country. Whether he's interested remains to be seen, but there's a reported friction between Gundy and Oklahoma State athletic director Mike Holder that might have Gundy considering other offers.
Tennessee is trying to find a replacement for Derek Dooley, who was fired in November before the Vols' final game after three years on the job. He was 4-7 in his final season.
