Report: D-backs place OF Tomas on outright waivers
The Arizona Diamondbacks have placed outfielder Yasmany Tomas on outright waivers, according to a report from The Arizona Republic.
If Tomas clears waivers, which is likely, he will be removed from Arizona's 40-man roster. The Cuban slugger is owed roughly $46 million over the next three seasons.
Given his major league service time, Tomas could refuse his outright assignment to the minors, but doing so would result in forfeiting the remaining money on his deal, which is unlikely.
The D-backs optioned Tomas to Triple-A Reno to begin the season last weekend.
Tomas was limited to just 47 games last year because of an injury. Listed as out with a groin injury, Tomas underwent season-ending core muscle surgery in August.
The 27-year-old broke out offensively in 2016, hitting 31 home runs in 140 games. However, he's regarded as a poor defensive outfielder, which played a role in him beginning this year in the minors and not being recalled when Steven Souza hit the disabled list with a strained pectoral muscle.
Tomas has 48 home runs and a .268 career average in his three major league seasons. The Diamondbacks signed him to a six-year, $68 million deal in December of 2014, and he holds player options for 2019 ($15.5 million) and 2020 ($17 million).
