The Chicago Cubs have agreed to a deal with free-agent closer Craig Kimbrel, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports.

The seven-time All-Star who won a World Series with the Boston Red Sox last season has remained on the free-agent market through the first two months of the season.

The deal is for three years and $43 million according to multiple reports. MLB Network reports that Kimbrel has a fourth-year option for $16 million.

Cubs need bullpen help

His addition is a boost to a Cubs bullpen that has struggled this season while blowing 11 save opportunities. Kimbrel has a career 1.91 ERA and has converted 333 saves over his nine-year career with the Red Sox, Atlanta Braves and and San Diego Padres.

The Cubs were allowed more financial flexibility when they placed utility man Ben Zobrist on the restricted list.
