Report: Big3's quarantined reality-show tournament delayed to August

The Big3 league’s quarantined, reality show-style, three-on-three preseason tournament will be delayed to the end of summer, per a report by USA Today.

The founders of the league — hip-hop icon and actor Ice Cube and entertainment executive Jeff Kwatinetz — planned for the event to take place in April or May, Yahoo Sports’ Chris Haynes first reported in March. It was meant to fill the national hole left during sports hiatus during the COVID-19 crisis, but is now reportedly being put on hold itself due to the pandemic.

Big3 reality show-style tournament pushed back

The tournament will take place in either August or September, per USA Today, and the regular season will be pushed to either fall or winter as a result.

“It’s a fluid situation,” a person familiar with the situation told USA TODAY Sports. “It’s hard to provide a fixed date, but it’s happening.”

The event was reportedly pushed due to concerns about participants traveling out of state and the COVID-19 testing shortages around the nation.

Big3 tournament planned like ‘Big Brother’

The Big3 partnered with Endemol, producers of “Big Brother,” to create the tournament. Executive producers of the hit show would work along with the Big3 employees to produce.

After receiving a negative COVID-19 test result, participating players and referees will be quarantined in the same Los Angeles-area home the league would provide.

The tournament would take three weeks and consist of 16 players. On top of game play, the daily lives of the participants would be captured on camera for the drama and storylines.

It is tentatively set to be called “Big Brother: Big3” and initially planned to begin this week.
