Regional playoffs set, with five Kitsap teams seeking wins for state berths, seeding

North Kitsap will face Mark Morris in the regional round of the Class 2A state tournament on Friday at Tacoma Community College.
North Kitsap will face Mark Morris in the regional round of the Class 2A state tournament on Friday at Tacoma Community College.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association produced brackets for the regional round of state tournament play Sunday, hours after committees met to determine seeding in each of the state's six classifications.

Five West Sound teams will be in action in regional games, including two on the boys' side: North Kitsap and Bremerton of the Olympic League 2A.

North Kitsap (20-4) earned the No. 3 seed after losing Saturday's West Central/Sea-King District championship game to Renton. The loss likely prevented the Vikings from being able to lay claim on the No. 1 seed, which went to defending state champion Lynden. North Kitsap drew No. 6 Mark Morris in a regional game that will be played Friday at 8 p.m. at Tacoma Community College.

The benefit for North Kitsap being a top-eight seed is that the team has already clinched in the state tournament in Yakima. The bonus for regional winners, however, is receiving a first-round bye at state. North Kitsap, the 2020 state champions in 2A, placed fifth last season.

Bremerton (17-6) drew the No. 11 seed and will play No. 14 R.A. Long at Tacoma Community College on Saturday at 10 a.m. The Knights, who will be making their first regional appearance since 2010, must win to secure a berth in Yakima.

On the girls' side, Sea-Tac League 1B champion Crosspoint (22-3) drew the No. 4 seed and will face No. 5 Almira Coulee Hartline at Tacoma Community College on Saturday at noon. The Warriors lost in the regional round a year ago as the No. 16 seed, but are guaranteed to advance to the state tournament in Yakima, regardless of Saturday's result. A win would give Crosspoint a first-round bye.

North Kitsap (13-10) and Kingston (14-9) earned the No. 15 and No. 16 seeds in the 2A girls tournament and need to win at regionals to advance to the state tournament in Yakima. The Vikings take on No. 10 Sammamish at Issaquah High School on Saturday at 2 p.m., while the Buccaneers face No. 9 Ridgefield at Battle Ground High School at 6 p.m. Friday.
