Refugio football, track star Ernest Campbell commits to Texas A&M
Refugio receiver and star sprinter Ernest Campbell chose Texas A&M over a bevy of offers on Saturday at a party in front of friends and family.
The three-time boys 100-meter dash champion in Class 2A has led the Bobcats to two state championships in track and last year was integral in Refugio's march to the football state championship game in Class 2A Division I.
In addition to playing football for the Aggies, he will also continue his highly productive track career in the Southeastern Conference. The four-star recruit is a two-time All-South Texas MVP in boys track and was the 2023 Texas Track and Field Coaches Association Athlete of the Year.
Campbell told the Victoria Advocate that his choice came down to Texas A&M and Houston and at the end of the day he chose the Aggies due to his relationship with the coaches.
"I feel like it was an easy pick for me," Campbell told the Advocate. "It felt like it was between them and Houston, but I felt like the coaches were great. ... I talked to players and they told me this is where I want to be at."
A combination football and track highlight video aired at the selection party at the end of which Campbell turned around and caught a football wearing a Texas A&M shirt.
Dave Campbell's Texas Football has installed Refugio as the No. 1 in Class 2A Division I and the Bobcats will also likely be favored to win their third consecutive state track championship.
