Refs miss huge facemasking call in Texans-Eagles

Given the fact that NFL officials are now calling penalties on defensive players for breathing in the same area code as the quarterback, it’s OK to wonder why some horrendous penalties actually don’t get called.

Case in point: this play late in the first half of the Texans-Eagles game (in video above), where Jadeveon Clowney just about pulls Eagles quarterback Nick Foles‘ head right off his shoulders during a two-point conversion attempt.

As it turned out, the missed two-point conversion didn’t factor into the Eagles’ 32-30 victory. But still: If the NFL’s going to insist on bubble-wrap protection for quarterbacks, there ought to be some provisions for making sure that the protections get, you know, enforced.

The Eagles got their payback when Clowney was hit with a roughing-the-passer penalty en route to Philadelphia’s winning field goal on the game’s final possession.
