The Reds lost 100 games in 2022. Where does this squad rank in team history?

Cincinnati Reds manager David Bell relieves starting pitcher Graham Ashcraft (51) in the sixth inning of the game with the Chicago Cubs at Great American Ball Park Wednesday.

The 2022 Cincinnati Reds came close to setting yet another record for the 141-year-old franchise. It wouldn't have been the kind of record that fans or the front office would like to tout.

The Reds lost 100 games in a season for the second time in their history but the current team left the 1982 Reds as the franchise's worst in total losses at 101. The Reds had a shot at the dubious record of losing 102 games but pulled out two of their last three games against Chicago after being swept last weekend by the Cubs in Wrigley Field.

The 1982 Reds also were worse than the current version in another measure of dysfunction, since the team from 40 years ago had a winning percentage of .377. The 2022 Reds' winning percentage was .383, tying it with the 1930 Reds for the seventh worst won-lost percentage in team history.

The Reds weren't alone in having a miserable year. They were one of four MLB teams to suffer at least 100 losses in 2022, along with the Oakland Athletics, the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Washington Nationals.

The home team in recent years has been racking up 90-loss seasons at a much faster pace than at any other time in the Reds’ 141-year history. The team now has had 19 seasons where it lost 90 or more games. But five of those seasons ‒ 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and now 2022 ‒ have been in the last decade.
